any suggestions for the best way to get from either granada or malaga to barcelona? we have four people so even cheap flights will run around $325 total.

Consider the night train between Granada and Barcelona. We did it in the opposite direction in 2005 and it worked great.

Don't just consider the night train but also day trains which may be cheaper. The journey will take about six and a half hours (but if comparing that time to flying remember the train is city centre to city centre) and you will probably need to change in Madrid. You can find detailed instructions on how to book cheap tickets in advance on the Seat 61 website.

If you're worried about the cost, then don't bother with the train. The cheapest overnight sit-up ticket is going to be about $75-80 each. Even from Malaga, web advance specials on the fast trains via Madrid will cost you about $100 each, and it'll take most of a day.
$80 each for flying isn't a bad deal....after all, you're travelling 450 miles in a straight line, about the same as Washington-Detroit.

With 4 people sharing, why don't you just rent a car? Set up the rental from home and take turns driving. The Autovia is an excellent divided highway. Just make sure that the vehicle can be picked up and dropped off at different locations.
