Getting around Madrid...

We will be arriving and leaving via Barajas airport and my husband wanted to see a bullfight. No other definite plans, but I was wondering if it'd be wise to purchase a 10-ride metrobus ticket, or are most of the sites walking distance? I'm finding it hard to guage based on the maps. We are staying close to the Royal Palace (on the same street, south of there). In the guidebook, it mentions the streets being 'broad, hot and exhausing,' but we're going to be there 3 days the very end of March, so 'hot' may not be a problem. What are your thoughts?

Hi, Sherri:
I was in Madrid the first week in September of last year. It was very hot that week, around 95. I walked from the Royal Palace to the El Prado museum. I never took a bus once. I am in my mid 60's.
I wouldn't think you would need a metrobus unless you have rain.

Madrid is a city in which to walk..from the Palace to the Prado, with Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol and lots of things to see in between. I think there would a long walk from the hotel to the bull fight arena as I have not been to a bull fight. But the only way to see the city is on foot.

Be sure to check the time schedule for the bullfight. They may not be any in March from my recollection.

Hot should not be a problem. I have been in the city in March of the past two (three?) years, and have found it to be very comfortable.

I'd get the metro pass not because of the heat, but to save time. There are a LOT of things to do/see in Madrid, and we found that hopping on the metro saved us a ton of time.

Recently returned. Stayed accross from the Palace. We walked, took the metro, one block (long) fm the hotel and took taxis. The cost of the taxi was the same as if the four of us took the metro.
