get from Madrid to Granada?

In March I'm flying into Madrid. My daughter will meet me there, she's a college student abroad and will fly down on a commuter flight from Brussels. We will spend 3 days in Madrid, then go to Granada for 3 days, then back to Madrid for me to fly home. We see that the cost of the train from Madrid to Granada is 64 Euros; that seems expensive, especially considering that my daughter's commuter flights around Europe are tending to cost 40 Euros or so. My quesion is: what's the best way for me to travel from Madrid to Granada, and back? Methods other than train? Any suggestions? thanks!

The price seems reasonable. And I think the train is the best way to go. My guess is that discount airlines do not fly to Granada. You might consider flying to Malaga and taking the bus to Granada. It is two hour bus ride and about 9E. It is very convenient. The train and bus station are side by side in Malaga with a city bus to both. The is nearly hourly bus service to/from Granada. The Granada bus station on the edge of town so it is about a 10E taxi ride to the center of Granada. If over 60 you could get a 25 to 40% on the train ticket depending on the day of the week.

Take the bus. The bus takes only 20 minutes or so more than the train (5 hours total), and it costs 16.17 Euro! Just a reminder...no washrooms on the buses, so don't fill up with coffee! You'll stop about 2:15 or so into the trip for a break at a roadside restaurant. You can check schedules and buy on-line at www.movelia.es . Seats are reserved. Look for the "Man from La Mancha" windmills high on the hills as you head south across the plains of La Mancha. And be prepared for some breathtaking scenery as you take the highway from Madrid to Granada thru the Sierra Nevada mountains (after your stop).
