Germany - Zugspitze - Travel from Fussen to Garmish / trip worth it?

We are thinking of taking a side trip from Fussen to Garmish to go up the Zugspitze mountain cogwheel / cable car. There is a good chance the connection at Eibsee to to the top with the cable car will still be under repair. Is it worth it to get as far as Eibsee?

Also, according to the DB train site, the best way to get from Fussen to Garmish (the base of the Zugspitze rail) is via a 3 hour bus ride. Is that really the best way? It appears there is a rail system from Reutte, Austria (just across the border from Fussen) that takes you through the mountains to Garmish. Does anyone know how to get more info on this?

Thank you!

Hi Lisa,

This isn't an answer to your question but an alternative to the Zugspitze. There is a very good cable car ride just 1 mile from Neuschwanstein called the Tegelberg. There's a luge (Sommerrodelbahn) there also.

I'm not sure if there are any, but y ou could also look into trips from Fuessen to the Austrian side of the Zugspitze in Ehwald, Austria. Not too far from Fuessen. This is done by taking just one cable car to the top.

The cogwheel train (Zugspitzebahn) goes nearly to the summit, giving you two options for an ascent from the German side. I can't imagine that both the cable car and the train would be out of service at the same time. There's also a cable car that ascends from the Austrian side, although I'm not sure from where (but this point is probably closer to Fuessen). So, you shouldn't have any trouble getting to the top.

The cable car to the top of the Zugspitze from the Austrian side is from Ehrwald, Austria. I misspelled Ehrwald in my previous post.

First, the actual bus ride from Füssen to GaP is only 2 hours. You probably saw the 9:45 connection out of Füssen. It has a change of buses at Echelsbacher Brücke with a 1 hr wait, so it does take 3 hrs. Is the 2 hr 8 min connection leaving Füssen at 8:05 too early for you? There is a 1 hr 59 min connection at 12:35, but that is probably too late. With the all bus connection you can use an RVO Tagesticket (day pass, currently €8,50 pP) for your round trip.

If the two hour bus connections are not at convenient times, the next fastest route is via a bus to Pfronten-Ried, then the train (Außerfernbahn) via Reutte to GaP. You can do that, round trip, with a €27 Bayern-Ticket for up to 5 people.

There is also a bus from Füssen to Reutte in Tirol (from there you can take the train to GaP), but those buses only seem to run first thing in the morning and in the afternoon, and the Bayern-Ticket, which covers the train, won't cover the bus to Reutte.

If you use the Bayern-Ticket, it is also valid for GaP to Grainau (on the way up the Zugspitze). I'm not sure, but the Bayern-Ticket might also get you a discount on the Zugspitzebahn.

As Harry points out, there are several ways to get to the top of Zugspitze. According to the Zugspitze website, only the Eibsee Seilbahn (cable car) will be out of service (and that only for a max of Oct 21-30). The Zahnradbahn (Cog train) will be running.

With a Bayern-Ticket you get a €4 (almost 10%) discount for the trip.
