Should I make the rest of the hotel reservations now? Or can my daughter and I make reservations as we go? Not sure if we want a solid schedule. Could it be hard to find hotels with vacany as we go? Do German hotel supply shampoo and conditioner?
It seems to me that more hotels are supplying a multi-purpose shower gel and sometimes a separate bottle of shampoo. I always travel with my own, though. If I like theirs, I'll use it and save mine. Just don't count on it being there. If you are prepared to be very flexible, I'd say you can just wing the rest of the dates. Get there very early in the day, though. Or, call the day before (or email a few days before). Rothenburg odT and Salzburg I'm familiar with; they could be challenging because they're extremely popular, but again if you're flexible you can find something...I don't know about the other two places. Your schedule looks pretty firmed up, though...
When travelling by train, it is not very easy to find hotel accommodations. You could end up walking alot carrying your luggage. If you want to stay in Rick Steves' recommended places, you should reserve ahead of time. So many people use his tour book and want to stay in the places he recommends. You are also travelling during high season. Another option would be to use the TI at the train station in the town you are visiting. They can call, or look up the hotel on the internet to check availability. If you do decide to wing it, call at least two days ahead of time and reserve by phone. Have a great trip with your daughter.
You could end up spending valuable vacation time searching for a place to stay, especially in high tourist towns like Salzburg and Rothenburg as noted above. If you aren't that particular about where you stay, then it shouldn't be a problem -- just time consuming.
I would make reservations now since you are traveling during high season. As mentioned above, you may end up using your precious vacation time worrying and looking for your next bed. We used to wing our European vacations in the 1990s but we traveled late October for six plus weeks. And even then, I was stressed until we are settled in.
