Keisha, With such a very short time frame, which place to visit will depend to a large extent on where your flight back to the U.S. will be leaving from. As you'll be in Munich, it would make sense to choose a location that's easily reachable from there. Lucerne or Salzburg should both be possible (although I haven't looked at the transportation times). Happy travels!

Hi Meisha, Do you have hotel reservations for Munich yet? I noticed you wanted to go during Oktoberfest. If you don't have a reservation by now I think you'll be hard pressed finding something, I think you'll be shocked at the price. We went to Munich during Oktoberfest and booked almost a year in advance... Why not return with your girls and stay along the Rhine or Mosel? It's a beautiful area. You could fly then out of Frankfurt.

Do you have your airline tickets yet? If you aren't locked into flights, pick something fairly close to Munich by train, and fly home from there - Berlin? Vienna? If you are flying back from Dusseldorf, that's a whole different kettle of fish, since you will have to factor in both the time from Munich to X and then from X to Dusseldorf, which doesn't leave much left of a 3-day trip.

Can you specify exactly how many full days you have to fill? If you fly on the 3rd day, then you really only have two days. And from which airport do you leave? If you're flying out of Dusseldorf, then you really only have one full day of exploring left, because you will likely need to use most of the pennultimate day to travel back to Dusseldorf. I would probably recommend the Bavarian Alps, the Bodensee or the Mittelrhein, but it would help if you provided more information.

Thank you all so much for your responses. All of which are so helpful. Our tickets are not purchased yet as I am wanting to purchase this week but must decide on return destination. My thought was to leave Munich (by train/bus??) and travel to second destination, spend what's left of Sunday- Tuesday and fly home (DFW) from there? So Vienna or Salzburg would wk. it's actually cheaper to leave from Rome or Venice, which I would love to see but wondered if the 6 hr train ride would be worth it?
Thanks again for all your help!!!

Salzburg, although you have to work hard to find some place cheap. Three days there would be a minimum for me.

I think Wendy's idea makes a lot of sense. With such a short timeframe, it doesn't make sense to travel outside of Germany/Austria. I would price out flights from Frankfurt and Munich, and go with whatever is cheapest. There is plenty to see near both airports.

I'd think about a cheap flight to Berlin, then fly home from there. It's a wonderful city, and it would provide a real contrast to Munich and the Rhineland. Air Berlin flights would be less than $100 each.
