Germany/Salzburg Trip

I was thinking about taking a round trip flight to Munich from New Orleans and spending several days there starting around 4/29/12. I would like to visit Rotenberg,Bacharach and some of the castles on the Romantic Road. My husband and I would like to sample the beer. There is a festival on the Rhine called the Festival of the Flames on the Rhine. Does anyone know if that is worth it and where should we stay or how should we see it by land or boad? Finally, we want to take a two to 3 day trip to Salzburg and come back for the Festival in Germany and go home from there. I appreciate any thoughts or feedback

It isn't clear from your post how the flow of your proposed trip would run. Can you clarify? "and some of the castles on the Romantic Road" There aren't any major castles along the Romantic Road of which I am aware, with the exception of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau at the southern terminus of the road. The Romantic Road itself is just an ordinary German country road that links together some attractive towns. The scenery along the road is no better or worse than the average rural secondary route in Germany. Check out some of the specific towns if they interest you. The actual experience of driving the road, in my opinion, is highly overrated.

I'd visit Salzburg for just one day. Drink a few great tasting brews and venture onward. Lots to see in this big world of ours.

"Rhine in Flames" happens on several dates in different villages beginning in May. Very worthwhile. You should however consider heading straight to Bacharach - maybe fly into FRA first - because there's a unique festival on 4/30 every year in the neighboring village of Oberwesel called "Wine witch night"; there's a parade, music, fireworks, and a witch-burning - a straw witch, of course, to mark the end of the old wine season, and the crowning of a new wine queen to bring in the new season. http://www.oberwesel.de/portal/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=484&Itemid=286&lang=english Or you can hit the 5/5/12 Rhine in Flames show north of Koblenz between Linz and Bonn. Fireworks are set off in each of seven different towns, beginning in Linz at 9:40 and proceeding north one town after the other, and the boats follow the show. Linz is a fantastic "hidden gem" of a town with lots of half-timbered buildings, old town walls and towers; I'd probably stay there and watch the show there from the riverbank. The boat thing involves a meal and drinks, usually, and will likely run you well over 100€ per couple, but maybe it's worth it - I've never done it.
