Recommendations for places to stay long the Romantic Road? Character and affordability. Thx.
The end points of the Road, Füssen and Rothenburg (OK, Würzburg is actually the northern end point, but most people don't travel from Würzburg to Rothenburg via Bad Mergentheim, Weikershiem, etc) are the most interesting. Most of what's between is nice, but not a must see. Of the towns on the Road, my favorite was Nördlingen, because it, like Rothenburg, has a wall with a walkable Wehrgang. But it is, in reality, a smaller, less touristy version of Rothenburg. I stayed here in Nördlingen. It's right outside one of the town gates, close to the train station and a short walk to the center of town. When I stayed there in 2007, I paid €35 for a single room with breakfast. They speak some English. Nördlingen is accessible by train and, if you spend several nights there, you can go to Dinkelsbühl by bus and to Harburg by train to see the castle (www.burg-harburg.de).
There is (was) an annotated Romantic Road map available (I think Romantic Road website) with brief descriptions of the towns and villages along the way. Dinkelsbuhl is another small walled village and there are other interesting villages along the way- at least worth a stop for a few hours. That would be a good start for your decisions as to where to go. Once you decide where you want to stop you can investigate hotels
