Greetings. Working on my itinerary for our trip in 2014 (probably May-June) for 14 - 21 days. What I am considering is the following with tentative stay times Berlin 2-3 nights Dresden (day tour from Berlin??) Prague 3 nights Vienna 3 nights Munich 2 nights Freiburg 1 night Rudesheim am Rhein 1 night then fly out of Frankfurt to
Croatia. I'm thinking that train travel from Berlin - Prague - Vienna - Munich would be best, then renting a car in Munich and dropping it off at Frankfurt airport would be the best way. Any thoughts, hints, or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Hello Gonzy. I see eight (8) destinations in the list of places that you want to go to in Europe. I suggest that you go to a total of six places. Did you travel in Europe before ?
Berlin - you'll probably be jetlagged on arrival. And there's lots to see. I'd allow 3 full days after arrival. Potsdam might be a nice day trip if you really don't find enough to keep you in Berlin. Dresden - worth an overnight on the way to Prague. It's lovely after dark. On the other hand, it is similar to Prague in archecture, so you could either skip it, or perhaps take an early train from Berlin , check your bags at the Dresden station (if possible), sightsee for the day, then get a late train to Prague. Realistically, it will take you at least 3 hours from your hotel to checking your bags in Dresden. Then it's another 3 hours from Dresden to your Prague hotel. It's almost 5 hours just on the train from Berlin to Prague. Vienna - arrive on day 1 (5 hours train ride), sightsee on day 2, leave on day 3 (4-5 hour train ride). The train trips will eat up most of both days. Remember that when you change cities, you need to add the time on the train, the time to pack, check out, arrive at the station, then the reverse at your destination. This is why Ron and many others on the helpline will tell you to delete some of your destinations. Before you lock into flights, use the German train site bahn.de (choose the UK English - for some reason the US English site doesn't work as well) and see the train schedules for each leg of your journey. For instance, from Berlin to Dresden, there's a fast train (2 hours) but it arrives at 11 a.m. If you want to be in Dresden earlier, it's a 3-hour-plus train ride (and changing trains). (when you use the site, Hbf = main train station)
Thanks Ron, yes I have travelled in Europe before. My wife and I usually hit the ground running when we go. Hi Chani, thanks for your input. I might cut out the leg through the Black Forest and the Rhein Valley and fly out of Munich to Croatia. Much to think about.
