Germany/Prague/Amsterdam trip

Hi! I am planning a trip to Germany, also visiting Prague and Amsterdam for a few days. I need help planning! We are leaving in July, and will be there for about 16 days. We are flying into Berlin.

Here are my major questions...first off, what are the must-see places to go?? Here is what I am thinking...a couple days in Berlin, Prague, Munich, and Amsterdam. That takes care of 8 days. After that, I'm pretty much clueless. I definitely want to hit up Heidelberg, Ludwig's castles, Rothenburg, and Cologne. Is this feasible to do within the 8 days? I am just looking for some suggestions/guidance on what are the best places to go within that short amount of time. I want to maximize my time without feeling like we are extremely rushed and never having time to breath.

Also...will it be possible to travel everywhere via the train? I was looking into purchasing a 15 day Eurail pass. Are over-night trains possible and worthwhile?

Any help or suggestions you could give would be much appreciated!!

I can tell you now a 15-day pass is too much money for your travels.

Go to this site and enter your estimated dates for your travels. Write down the ticket prices and compare to a "Rail Pass Day".

Check the savings using "Lander Tickets".

Check out the Bayern/Barvarian Ticket prices.

Compare all the prices.

You have to do your homework in order to save money.

"Berlin, Prague, Munich, and Amsterdam. That takes care of 8 days". I think you need to recalculate. Consider the traveling times, hotel arrival, checking-in, unpacking and repacking. If you include all of that within your 8-day time frame, you're only have about 1.5 days for each of the cities you listed. I would give 3 days mimimum for each.

"I want to maximize my time without feeling like we are extremely rushed and never having time to breath." In that case, I would probably just keep the four main destinations, and maybe extend your time in Munich for daytrips. Constantly darting from one destination to the next will leave yourself completely exhausted half-way through.

"will it be possible to travel everywhere via the train"- Yes, and that is the easiest way to link all of your destinations.

"Are over-night trains possible and worthwhile?" If you plan to follow the route of Berlin-Prague-Munich-Amsterdam, the only stretch where a night train would make sense would be Munich-Amsterdam. Overnight trains, in my opinion, save time for travelers only if you are a very sound sleeper. Many on this website (myself included) report a very fitfull night, and needing the next day to recover.
