Germany itinerary this October - assistance please!!

Hi travelers! I'm hoping for some help please. I'm planning to go to Germany this October 2 - 12 with my husband (late 30s). We are flying into Frankfurt & out of Munich. I'm seeking itinerary assistance. I've been researching a lot, but this is a last-minute trip and I can use help in making a few decisions. Specifically, I'm seeking advice regarding which town to use a base in the wine region. At this point, I'm thinking 3 nights in Bacharach (based on Rick's book suggestion) & one night in Trier....and then our last 3 nights in Munich. Any suggestions for the middle 3 days?? Thank you in advance for your advice!!

Not sure if you know this, but 3 Oct. is a national holiday in Germany. It is Re-unification day, so stores will be closed. Frankfurt is having a big Jazz festival that day, and other towns may be having events too.

On Fri. the 2nd, the Alte Nikolai church (built in 1270 and located on the Roemerburg) is having a special Middle Ages concert with songs and dances from that time period.

There is also a big American style football game on the 4th.

Frankfurt is actually an excellent base city due to its location, as well as being a city with a lot of things to see and do. (46 museums!) lots of concerts and cultural events as well as many historical buildings and lovely old churches.

Not sure if you made your reservation or not yet for Trier, but I'd suggest maybe instead of staying there, plan for 2-3 nights in Cochem, which is along the Mosel. It is an easy day trip (train of 1 hr or less) from there to Trier. Cochem has some great wineries and you can use it to do other day trips (like Trier or to Burg Elz). My wife and I stayed there for 3 nights and really loved it. Took a trip down to Trier for the day and it was easy.

It was a little more expensive than other accommodations on our trip, but we stayed at Hotel Lohspeicher. The owners are a younger couple(he's a gourmet chef) and they went way out of their way to make our stay wonderful! We stayed with Lettie in Bacharach and really enjoyed that too.

Hope this helps!

We lived 3 yrs (02-05) near Trier and spent many hours in the villages along the Mosel. We currently live about 2 hrs from the Mosel; NW of Frankfurt. I must agree, staying in Cochem is a GREAT idea. There's a wonderful castle there as well as being a great wine town. I see trier as a day trip (my opinion), to see the Porta Negra, Roman ruins, and maybe do some shopping. If you have time, stop by my favorite wine village, Bernkastel-Kues (near Cochem), and have lunch/dinner at the Waldshenke. It's at the top of the vineyards and overlooks the Mosel. You won't be disappointed. Most important, don't cram too much into your itinerary. Enjoy your Trip!

HI all - THANK you for all your help. Your ideas and advice are very much appreciated. At this point, we are planning to stay 4 nights in Cochem (immediately upon arriving at the Frankfurt airport); Do day trips from there by train; then rent a car & drive to Rothenburg for 2 nights; and then our last 4 nights in Munich (with a day trip to Saltzburg). Of course, I'm still finalizing things, so always open to other advice!! :-)
