Germany itinerary

Any thoughts or suggestions for this proposed itinerary? We are spending 10 days touring Germany with our 26 year old daughter, then meeting our German friends in Sommerhausen where they will take over our sightseeing for the next five days. With them we'll see Prauge, Nuremburg, Bayreuth,Bamburg.
Here's our proposed itinerary with a rental car:

Frankfurt to Mosel and Rhine area, two nights.
Colmar for one or two nights, wine tour.
Drive to Staufen for two nights and day trip to Black Forrest sights.
Lake Constance, staying in Lindau for one or two nights.
Ruette for two nights, doing castle tours in Fussen also
Munich for two nights
Rothenburg ODT for two nights
Sommerhausen--meeting our friends.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. We're a very fit couple in our early 50's who like to walk most places once we arrive.

Prefer small, old and quaint over large and modern. For instance, in our last trip to Germany, Switz and Austria our favorite places were Hall in Tirol, Staufen, Murren, Gimmelwald.

We have no reservations made at this time so we're very flexible! Thanks in advance.....John

"Ruette for two nights, doing castle tours in Fussen". Unless you're on a Rick Steves tour and have no choice, pick someplace better than Reutte. Nothing wrong with it, just... meh.

What would you suggest over Ruette? I'm very open to suggestion. Should we stay in Fussen?

If you stay in Hohenschwangau, you can walk to both castles. We walked to each castle "after hours", and you get a quiet, relatively private viewing of the outside. Of course we also toured both during the day. Hohenschwangau is really small-not many hotels or restaurants.

stayed in reutte at pension waldrast on outskirts of town. heuter family was friendly and helpful. hiked from there to ehrenberg ruin in late afternoon. were the only ones there with wildflowers blooming. loved it.
maybe reutte is meh as a town but IMO its where you go and what you do not where you sleep that makes a trip.

I made a side trip from Schwangau to Ruette to see if I was missing anything - nope. It's okay, but there are lots of good places to stay near the castles. Colmar is less than an hour to the Black Forest, so you can tour both areas without having to move. Oberkirch in the Black Forest and Ribeauville on the wine road north of Colmar are both very pretty & quaint towns to stay in. The town of Wasserburg immediately west of Lindau is a lot less crowded & has several nice places to stay.
