Germany itinerary

How does this look? We arrive in Bacharach on Saturday evening. Sunday Explore Bacharach. Take the boat to St. Goar and explore castle there and then boat back home Monday Use the regional train ticket for the 5 of us to go over to Burg Eltz. If after visiting we feel like it, we may go on to Cochem to explore before we return to Bacharach Tuesday Not quite sure what to do here. My stepbrother is stationed in Baumholder so it may depend on what they have been able to join us for. If they haven't been able to get out with the baby, then we may go visit them on this day. If not, I'm not sure wht to do. We are staying in Mainz this night in a hotel right outside the train station. Wednesday
Eat breakfast and take train to Frankfurt Airport to fly home Christine

Sunday: Rheinfels is a moderately interesting set of ruins. I would take the boat to Braubach instead to tour the only never-destroyed Rhine Castle: Marksburg. A Rheinland-Pfalz ticket will let you use the trains on the way back. Consider using the same ticket to head north of Koblenz to visit the attractive village of Linz or the Remagen WW II museum. http://www.marksburg.de http://www.bruecke-remagen.de Monday: Do Cochem if at all possible. Fabulous town, Cool falconry show at Reichsburg castle there (11:00, 1:00, 2:30, 4:00) http://www.falknerei-reichsburg-cochem.de/fotobuch.htm Tuesday: You could see Mainz's fabulous Romanesque Dom and enjoy the Tuesday farmer's market (7:00-2:00.) Spend the evening in the old town along Augustinerstrasse south of the Dom. http://www.mainz.de/WGAPublisher/online/html/default/hthn-6bvj3v.en.html

My first thought is that you are going to spend almost 2 hours on the boat and there are not very many things to see. Unless you really like to ride boats, you might consider the 10 min train ride back instead of the 1:10 boat trip. Unfortunately, K- D know that people who know would never take the boat back over the train, so they structure the fare so that most (€11) of the round trip fare (€13,20) is on the first half so the trip back by boat is less than by train. There are boats (70 min) from St. Goar to Bacharach at 2:20, 3:20, and 5:20 PM. There are trains (10 min) every hour at 20 min past and one at 16:45. I was so fascinated with Rheinfels that I spent 2½ hours in it. I also saw Marksburg and enjoyed the fact that it hasn't been lived in for hundreds of years, and, consequently, is preserved as it was back then (and it's easier to get to than Burg Eltz).

I would visit Marksburg over Burg Eltz anytime. Burg Eltz is very out of the way, in my opinion, and really not that interesting. The whole time I was touring it, I thought "Why in the world is this Rick's favorite?" I have been to Rheinfels Castle a couple of times and would go back again. It is only second to Haute Koenigbour?g in the Alsace region of France as my favorite castle.
