My sisters and I are flying into Amsterdam to attend a conference. We plan on leaving from there on May 25th either by train or rental car and making our way through Germany and flying out on June 2nd, out of Munich. We need suggestions and help. We've done some research and want to see the Rhine river, castels and the romantic road. Please advise!
I would drive to the Rhine River area and stay in St Goar for a couple of nights. Explore the region, Reinfels and Marksburg Castles. From that region you could either drive to Rothenburg, which is a major tourist destination or even Nuremburg. Spend a couple nights at either location. Then on to Munich. I would give Munich 2 full days if not 3 and you could squeeze in a day trip to Salzburg. Happy travels!
I am one of her sisters and I have a question too. Do you have any suggestions of castles that are hotels? We want to spend the night in a castle. My parents remember staying in one 30 years ago but do not remember the name. I have googled, but could not find one in that area. Thank you!
There is a castle/hotel near Rothenburg (probably half an hour away) someone here will know the name, but I woukl recommend staying within the walls, Rothenburg relaxes after the busses leave. You can also then do the Nightwatchman's Tour which is highly entertaining With only 8 days i would absolutely make my hotel reservations ahead of time 1) get your hotel of choice
2) dont waste valuable vacation time looking for hotels 3) what do you do if there are no (acceptable) hotels on the day you are there- walk to next town?
I'm not familier with staying in the castles. They are usually to expensive for my budget. There is a hotel in the Rheinfels Castle grounds, and I seem to remember a castle turned hostel up river a town or two, but I don't think it gets very good reviews as a hotel. Hopefully someone else will chime in. One thing I didn't take into account was renting a car in one country and dropping off in another. That might change your plans a bit. I always loop around a drop off in the same country I rent from. Still a very doable trip. I hope you all have a good time!
Hey Susan, I did a little google search and found Castle Hotel Colmberg. I forgot that I actually toured the grounds of that castel in 2008. I was there way early so didn't even get a chance to have lunch in the restaurant. It's situated between Rothenburg and Nuremburg, if you happen to be in that area.
You could always take a train to a city you plan to visit in Germany and then pick up your rental car... or train from Amsterdam to Munich...see Munich first, then get your rental car, tour the countryside and drop the car at the Munich airport when you fly out.
Thank you for all the suggestions. What are y'alls recommendations for lodging, do you need to make reservations in advance or can you get a room without them? I don't want to spend the whole trip driving, what cities should we stay in? I know there is so much to see in this region, what are the "must see and must do"? Thanks!
