We have a group of 5 that already have tickets for the Passion Play in Oberameragu- traveling from Los Angeles to Frankfurt, then departine from Munich 21 days later. Any suggestions for iteriary and accomodations greatly appreciated.
There is so much to do in Bavaria alone. Munich is worth several days, at least. Go to Salzburg; better yet spend several days in Berchtesgaden (Königssee, Eagles' Nest) and take a day trip to Salzburg on the bus. Visit the area around Garmisch-Partenkirchen (Mittenwald, the castles at Hohenschwangau). Go up to Rothenburg and Würzburg. From Rothenburg/Würzburg take the train to the middle Rhine (Bacharach, St. Goar, Braubach) or go up the Mosel to Cochem or Trier.
If you are going to stay for a while in Oberammergau, the bus to Hohenschwangau (Neuschwanstein) takes about an hour. You can do that as a day trip. You can also take a bus from Oberammergau to Garmisch and the train from there to Mittenwald.
On your way from Rothenburg to the middle Rhine, stop in the northern Black Forest (Calw, Freudenstadt, Baden Baden).
Figuring out what to do with 21 days in Germany; I wish I had your problem.
It's tough to make suggestions with nothing to go on - no specific interests are mentioned - so you might just look over the Rick Steves guidebook suggestions for Germany first and discuss them among yourselves. Germany is a very large country with lots to see. Narrow it down a bit and then post some more specific questions.
A lot of Passion Play enthusiasts share an interest in religious history and sights; Bavaria is full of monasteries, abbeys, cathedrals and such. The Vierzehnheiligen north of Bamberg springs immediately to mind. Lee has mentioned the Rhine, which is peppered with some outstanding cathedrals, including those in Cologne, Mainz, Speyer, Worms, and Aachen (not far from Cologne.) Trier's Dom St. Peter is great too.
But for all we know, you're looking for a great beer hall, or a factory tour.
Hi Diane,
What would really help is some info about your trip:
How you plan on traveling
what you're interests are
what type of accomodations you prefer
and so on.
For me, a rough itinerary would go like this:
Arrive Frankfurt
See the Mosel and Rhine area's. That could use 5 or 6 nights right there.
Couple of nights in Rothenberg ob der Tauber
Fuessen area to see Ludwig's Neuschwanstein/Hohenschwangau castles and take a cable car ride and luge ride at Tegelberg (1 mile or so from the castles). The Wieskirche is worth seeing also.
In the Oberramergau area we love Mittenwald. Also see Garmisch (along with the Zugspitze), Ettal Monestary, Ludwig's Linderhof, etc.
Berchtesgaden area which includes Salzburg, Eagles Nest, Koenigssee, Jennerbahn cable car, Bad Reichenhall, etc.
For even more alpine scenery include Austria... the Innsbruck area, the Zillertal area or Zell am See.
Just some thoughts.
