Germany,Austria,Netherlands spring trip idea

I will be traveling with three children 13,10,8 during Easter week of Spring of 2013. Any ideas of a "child friendly itinerary" for a period of 10 days? This is first trip to Europe for them and I would like them to get a nice exposure to European culture, weather, I think, illiminates Switzerland as an option (or is this an incorrect assumption)What do you suggest for mode of transportation, train or auto?

10 days also makes a trip to Switzerland impractical. Near Amsterdam: Zaanse Schans is great for families. Take the train to Koog-Zaandijk station. Germany: visit kid-friendly Castle Rheinfels in St. Goar and Marksburg in Braubach (both on the Rhine.) Nearby: The free-flight falconry show at Cochem's Reichsburg Castle offers 4 shows/day at 11, 1, 2:30 and 4:00 (closed Mondays.) http://www.falknerei-reichsburg-cochem.de/fotobuch.htm Cochem (on the Mosel River) is a fabulous old-world town with many fine half-timbered buildings, old town walls, narrow alleyways and towers surrounding the market square. Both Cochem and the Rhine towns are good bases for doing short daycruises by riverboat, but you'll be there too early for Mosel cruises, and it's possible the new Rhine schedule will not yet be in effect... Nearby Trier (Germany's oldest city) has Roman roots and interesting historical sights. You could easily spend 3-4 days in A'dam and 3-4 days on the Rhine/Mosel. Maybe a 3-4 day visit to Salzburg could be squeezed in as well if you fly home from there. But I wouldn't count on great weather there anymore than I would in Switzerland. Sounds like a train trip to me. One adult traveling with 3 of her own children can cover Amsterdam to the Rhine (Koblenz) for 39€ total, and the Rhine (Koblenz) to Austria (Salzburg) for as little as 29€ total; purchase advance sale tickets at www.bahn.de . Such tickets go on sale 92 days prior to your date of travel.
