Germany/Austria/France Trip Report

First, thanks to everyone on this board for the great info. I "lurk" here frequently to study up for my next trip.
We just got back from a week in Germany, Austria & France. I booked round-trip air to Frankfurt, so we started and ended our trip there. We first took a train to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, where we spent the night. We arrived early enough in the day to wander the town a little. We went in the Kathe Wohlfahrt Christmas store. It was absolutely gorgeous if you love Christmas like I do. It was actually hot in there from all the lights. We stayed one night at Hotel Goldener Hirsch. We got a family room which turned out to be two rooms sharing a bathroom. One of the rooms was located on the town wall, and we had the most incredible view. The breakfast was great too. When we were too tired to walk around anymore, we sat in front of our window and enjoyed the view.
The next day we moved on to Munich, where we spent 3 nights. We took day trips to Neuschwanstein/Hohenschwangau and Dachau. We took public transportation to both without any problem. We reserved the castle tickets ahead of time on their website. This allowed us to take a leisurely trip to Fuessen and see the castles in the afternoon. The walk to Neuschwanstein was a fairly steep uphill hike from the bus stop. We did not take a tour at Dachau, but saw where they were easily available. They also have audio guides. We just walked around and looked at the displays. If you stop to read, you can spend quite a bit of time and learn a lot. That was sufficient for us as we had kids with us and we weren't sure how they would take it. The rest of the time in Munich we just walked around Englischer Garten (saw some old men in their birthday suits and some surfers) and Marienplatz, as well as taking refreshment in outdoor cafes and the Hofbrauhaus.
