Dresden consists of two main parts: Old town (South of the Elbe river) and New Town (Neustadt, North of the river). Dresden Neustadt is student town, great nightlife spots, movie theatres, pubs, clubs, etc. The old town is more about historic sights etc. But of course Dresden got completely bombed out during WW2 and the socialists were more about creating wide boulevards etc. than recreating those tiny old streets so that even there you'll find many, many modern areas. Prager Str (Prague St) is the main shopping street, pedestrian zone and very well connected with the rest of the old town. There is a Mercure and Ibis hotel in that street. The Art-O-Tel is very close to the Zwinger and other historic sights and of course the #1 hotel in town is the historic baroque Taschenberg Palais (Kempinski hotel). Do make sure you spend time around the VW all-glass-manufacturing site (great park!) and the rose garden. BERLIN: Best mix of accessibility to main sights and cool nightlife is the area between Oranienburger Str. and Hackescher Markt which also includes the Radisson among others. Alternatively you might want to try Soviet Germany's #1 hotel, the stand-alone "skyscraper" which now is the Park Inn on Alexander Square. Trains from all airports, underground, busses, trams all stop just outside! MUNICH: Try the Torbräu hotel. Walking distance to everything. PRAGUE: Joseph's town (side streets of Parizka street, between the InterContinental and the main square of old town) is best IMO. VIENNA: Everything inside of or close to the Ring Str. is ideal. For all hotels check rates with HRS.COM. They also provide those little maps that might be of help.
