News flash

Nothing in Germany has changed much. St. Goar and Bacharach are still in exactly the same place. So is Munich and Rothenburg, etc.

My GAS book is also the 2000 version. I never rely on his books for lodging. Local town websites are still the best source for accommodations.

annette,

If you want to buy more current editions of the Guidebooks covering those areas, you'd need to buy:

  • Germany 2014
  • Switzerland
  • Vienna, Salzburg & Tirol

There are also a couple of Snapshot editions, which cover limited portions of some of those countries.

Most of the RS books are also available in E-book format, for use with Kindle, iPad or other readers. However, be sure to check the edition date when purchasing E-books, as they're typically a few months behind the print versions so you may be getting last year's edition.

Happy travels!

"Nothing in Germany has changed much. St. Goar and Bacharach are still in exactly the same place. So is Munich and Rothenburg, etc." True, but tourism details surely do change over time. Further, I use guidebooks more than just to book accommodations and the now three books with 1,850 pages of information are worthwhile in my opinion.

"Nothing in Germany has changed much"

True enough, but the German Blue Book has changed quite a bit since 2000. Mr. Steves has started to fill in some of the glaring gaps from the previous editions. He now covers more in central and northern Germany, including Hamburg and parts of Thüringen.

Hi,

You can also use Rough Guide to find accomodations im Germany and Austria. The recommendations range from budget to expensive.

Well, I know that the section about Frankfurt has changed a lot from the 2000 edition, because I sent them 2 pages of corrections back in 2008 and they used all of them. (frankly, I was a bit shocked at all the errors) The edition last year also changed a bit. If that is just one city, how many other corrections and changes are being made in all of the other guidebooks? New museums open, routes change for trains, prices change a lot, and new festivals have begun.

Cities are always in flux. If anybody thinks Berlin is anything like it was in 2000 or even 2005, they have a big surprise awaiting them. Even Frankfurt has changed tremendously in the last 10 years. I am sure Munich has too. What about Dresden and all those cities in the East?

Snapshot Munich, Bavaria & Salzburg is good?

well yes, but Vienna is not covered by that. You'll want a good guidebook for Vienna.
