My husband and I are taking our (almost) 6 year old, and 9 month old daughters to visit family in Dusseldorf this Christmas. We have not been to Europe in the winter, or with kids. Looking for advice on day trips good in the winter from Dusseldorf. And, an additional places to go for a few days around the new year. Maybe Vienna to explore the castles? What other city would be good to use as a base for a few days? Any advice on winter travel in euprope and what might be fun for an adventurous 6 year old would be great.
Thanks!
You could take the 6 year old snow tubing at Winterberg, which isn't too far from Düsseldorf. A couple of things to keep in mind about winter travel. One, it will obviously be colder than Santa Monica, but probably not as cold as you might think. More important, though, is that the hours of daylight will be greatly reduced. And during the day, it tends to be rather damp and gray. Meaning, don't plan any elaborate sight-seeing trips in the countryside. Concentrate on cities.
I think Vienna would be a great trip for winter, for adults it has a ton of outstanding museums and palaces. That said, those sights might be boring for a 6 year old. And it's quite far, you'd really probably want to fly. And that might entail delays. I would instead look into cities with kid-friendly exhibits closer. Berlin and Munich both have some indoor stuff for kids, and there's a lot even closer to Duesseldorf.
