Germany and The Grossglockner

Hi,
We are planning to go to Munich and the Bavarian Alps later this year and wonder if it is possible to go on a day trip to the Grossglockner from Munich or any other town in that area (other than going from Salzburg). I have looked into the offerings of two tour companies recommended by RS but they do not offer that location. I wonder if anyone has done this before and can offer some suggestions. I am not sure it is even possible. Thanks!

We drove the Grossglocker Road and saw tour buses whlile doing so but I am not sure from where they originated. Zell am See maybe. If you did decide to rent a car and drive this road you could spend the night in the little town of Heiligenblut just at the beggining of the Grossglockner Road on the south end. Heiligenblut offers a beautiful setting with views of the surrounding mountains including the Grossglockner.

I haven't done it, but know that it's easier to get tours from Salzburg since Salzburg is much closer to the mountain than Munich. Here's the website for a 7-hour tour to the mountain out of Salzburg (there are other tours from Salzburg, this is just one):http://www.mcmtours.at/en_grossglockner.htm You didn't say whether a rental car is one of your options. Driving from Munich city center is about 140 miles/2.5 to 3 hours.

It is too far for one day and it would be impractical. Theoretically it would be possible if you rent a car and are willing to drive most of your day. My advice: if you want to see Grossglockner stay one or two nights in the area and do some hikes. Enjoy.

Thanks, Kent. I may need to add a couple days to my trip and use Salzburg as a base for that trip. We were there in July in 2007 and really rainy weather made the grossglockner trip impossible. I just thought it would be nice to attempt it once again.
Kind regards, NH

Nadine: Sounds like a more enjoyable experience to do it from Salzburg (or consider Ilja's advice).Have you seen this website for the Grossglockner High Alpine Road (for travelers driving but you might find it interesting)?http://www.grossglockner.at/en/

Thanks Ilja. I might just do that.
Harry, thank you. The Zugspitze is already on my list but why settle for one when you could possibly get both ;) Thanks!

Years ago we drove over the Gross Glockner and on into Italy. It was scenic but I thought not better than many other places in the Alps.

Closer to Munich, I remember a drive through Seefeld in Tirol that lead to an overview of the Inn Valley and Innsbruck. Not as geographically amazing as the Gross Glockner but to my tastes more appealing.

Hi Nadine,

As a day trip from Munich... no. As a day trip from the Salzburg area, it would be a very long day.
We drove it starting out from Ramsau (Berchtesgaden area by Salzburg) and we also stayed a night in Heiligenblut, at the southern terminus of the Grossglockner Road. I agree with Lane that Heiligenblut is situated in a simply gorgeous spot!
It took us about 2 hours to drive from Ramsau to the Grossglockner Road. The Grossglockner Road itself is not that long, but with stopping, etc. it's pretty much up to you how long it would take to drive. We spent about 2 hours driving it.

If you're intereted, we have some photo's of the Groosglockner Road, Heiligenblut and Zell am See (close to the northern entrance to the Grossglockner Road.

Hope this helps.

Thanks very much for all the insightful answers. I am disappointed but at least now I know how to plan my time and what to do if I did want to include the Grossglockner - a few extra days in Salzburg weather permitting. Heiligenblut sounds wonderful and I will consider a few days there once I get my itinerary going. Thanks so much to everyone. This Helpline is fantastic!
