Going to CzechRepublic, Austria and Germany for Christmas marts December 1-14. In light of all the reports, and I am a frequent traveller-what is the feeling about staying away from Munich airport and trains. My gut says to go! Thanks, Linda
There was a similar thread started on 11/17 entitled "German Terror Alerts" . You may want to scroll down and locate that one. There were several responses, mostly saying to go ahead.
I haven't seen anything on local news for the past few nights about this (although I didn't watch the whole program). Apparently, the Germans are more worried about bailing out Ireland. "what is the feeling about staying away from Munich airport and trains" I would say if you plan to drive yourself everwhere, you considerably raise your risk of injury.
I flew home from Munich on 10/2 and didn't even know there was a terror alert until after I got home. I say go for it! The chances of anything happening to you are smaller than the chance of being hit by a car on your way to the airport for your flight over there.
I'm going to the same countries plus Hungary at about the same time and none of these alerts is going to stop me or worry me. Going to have fun and freeze my butt off.
I wouldn't have it any other way. Except I gotta admit the one day of driving the Autobahn I have to do makes me kinda nervous....and I'm no stranger to high speed driving. Guess I'm going to have to trust those Germans who do it all the time...it's impossible to trust my 'neighbors' here in L.A.
While the threats are real and your angst is legitimate and understandable, I would still go in similar circumstances. I suppose one could avoid city buses or the U-Bahn since mass transit remains a susceptible target everywhere, but I wouldn't restrict my sightseeing (personally I would still use mass transit anyway unless the authorities said not to). People living and working in NYC, DC, London, and Madrid have to deal with past events and a general threat every day, but they still live their lives on their terms and use the subway/Metro to get to work every day. You only live once, and you never know when your time is going to run out (or how it will expire). It may help to remember that, as long as you're not doing something stupid that could prematurely end your life, your time will end when and as it's supposed to regardless of what you think or do. Statistically speaking, no terrorist event will ever occur to you in your lifetime. You might still be a little nervous or even scared...you are human after all, but try to live your life without fear. I agree...go with your gut! And enjoy your trip!
Thanks everyone-I am also going to stop reading the negative posts! I hope you all too have a great trip.
Linda, we're going to Frankfurt 12/23 through 1/1 to visit our son and his family. (He's in the military and is stationed at Kaiserslautern). I've been keeping an eye on things, too, and until the State Dept tells me I must stay home, I'm going. This will be our 1st trip to Europe. For some reason I think I'm going to feel safer in Germany than I do at my own airport!! Have a wonderful trip.
linda, It's great to hear that you've decided to go ahead with your trip, despite the recent "alerts". While there are never any guarantees, you'll probably have a wonderful trip. Munich should be fantastic at this time of the year! Happy travels!
