In June, my daughter and I will be in Germany for the 1st time. We are flying into Frankfort and then hope to stay 1 night in Rothenberg,3 nights in Munich? Any suggestions on hotels, B&B's etc? We would like to stay close to the train station in Munich. We are planning a couple of day trips to Salzbug and the mountains, or Rhine? Any suggestions on day trips and/or tours would be appreciated. We thought about the bike tour in Salzburg but don't know if we can get to them by 9:00 am on the train from Munich.
I've always done well with Pensions in Germany. As a rule, the comfort and cleanliness is outstanding and the price is affordable. Pensions are similar to a bed and breakfast in the sense that you're essentially staying in a guest room in someone's home. The downside is, like being a guest in a home, many have bathrooms down the hall rather than ensuite baths (but usually only shared by one or two rooms). They normally also have a sink and mirror in your room. Some Pensions are larger, more like a guesthouse. The only Pension name I recall is Pension Poeschel in Rothenburg, but I've stayed in nice pensions in Munich and Bacharach (on the Rhine) - the quality is nice enough that I wouldn't hesitate to stay in any of them.
Rothenburg has an excellent website - www.rothenburg.de We stayed here dec. 2011 www.froehlich-rothenburg.de
Stayed here years ago www.hofmann-schmoelzer.de Both are decent, reasonably priced, inside the wall
I like Hotel Uhland in Munich (www.hotel-uhland.de.) It is a short bus ride or a long walk from the train station. In Rothenburg, I like Hotel Cafe Uhl (www.hotel-uhl.de.) Both places are clean, quiet, conveniently located and have delicious breakfasts.
If you only have a short time in Germany, Rothenberg ODT wouldn't even come close to the top of my list! From Frankfurt you could visit a Rhine town by train, or from Munich you could get to Garmish (mountains), Fussen (castles), dachau (concentration camp), nurnberg (wwii sites), etc.
Pick between Rothenburg and the Mittelrhein. The Mittelrhein lies within an easy daytrip from Frankfurt, but not from Rothenburg. Also, the Rhine is worth going out of your way to see, Rothenburg is only worth a stop if it lies along your route of travel. There's many lesser-known towns that provide the same sort of experience, minus all the trincket shops and tour buses.
Hi, "We would like to stay close to the train station in Munich." I stay in the train station (Hbf.) area too. If you take the Bayerstrasse exit from the station, numeous hotels of various price ranges and chains are across the street and to the right. Behind that is Schillerstrasse and Goethestrasse where the Pensionen ans smaller hotels are located. It's a very convenient area with the post office, internet cafes, the airport bus, Karstadt dept store, restaurants, the junction point for the subway and trams, etc.
Make sure you spell the town F-r-a-n-k-f-u-r-t, with a 'U', so you don't end up in Kentucky. If you want to see Munich and Salzburg (-bug?), drop by Rothenburg. The Rhein is not near Munich. For a list of places to stay in Munich, see my webpage. Uhland is close to the station (Hbf) but somewhat pricey; Royal is also close and more reasonable, but the neighborhood is not as nice.
The Eden Hotel Wolff is directly across the street from the RR Station. Use the Arnulf Strasse exit.
English is spoken at the desk and in the very good restaurant. Breakfast is bountiful and there is a comfortable bar with a big wood-burning fireplace. All rooms have private bathrooms attached.
In 2009 we stayed at the King's Hotel Center within a couple of blocks of the Hbf. I checked and it's still reasonably priced and they have twin rooms. They charge extra for the breakfast and it's a big pricey. We enjoyed the variety and convenience, but others in the hotel just walked over to the Hbf. for a cheaper and simpler meal. It gets a 8.6 rating on Booking.com. I tested for one night in June for 2 people and it was cheaper through Booking.com than directly with the hotel. However, the hotel might have a special for 3 nights that you can only get directly from them. We found it to be a quiet, comfortable and convenient place to stay.
We are thinking about Hotel Bavaria. Is it too far from the train station? And what is the best way to get to the airport on Friday?
