HELP!!! I will be going to Germany next month with my husband. He is there for business for 3 days in Enger Germany (Very SMALL town). Then we are going to Munich for Oktoberfest. I want to get out and do something fun while he is working. Where can I go?? There isn't much on the internet about Enger. It doesn't even show up on the map listed on the Germany tourism site. What nearby city should I visit??? I am open to anything. I want to head out for the day and come back in evening.
Enger has a website at www.enger.de. Unfortunately it is in German; how much of the language to you understand?
It seems to be a beautiful, very pleasant town of about 20,000 people. Ask your hosts; it appears that there is a museum in town. There also appear to be some "fachwerk" building, which would give it charm.
It's about a 15 min bus trip to the metropolis of Herford, where there is a train station. From there you can go to anywhere (Hannover is a little more than an hour away from Herford.) You are also not very far from Hameln, of rat charmer fame.
But for only three days, I think I would stay in Enger and enjoy sampling small town Germany.
Just in case you haven't made arrangements yet, you should be aware that lodging in Munich during Octoberfest will be a major challenge, unless you're willing to pay stunningly high prices (and even if you are, it probably won't be easy).
I don't know what your personal interests are. I looked at the Enger website and it looks pretty typical...if you like walks in the fields, etc. Some people like that, looking for birds, etc. A stroll through it's town center would be enlightening in it's own way. Maybe that's just the sort of relaxing you're looking for.
Personally, I think I might get a little bored in the likes of Enger after day 1 or 2. I think a trip to Hannover is in order if you're the type to need to get out and about in a city. It's just over 1hr away by car, but I can pretty much guarantee that a train is your best friend on that sort of day trip. I would pick up a Lonely Planet Germany guide to fill you in on what to see and do in Hannover. Rick doesn't really cover northern Germany in his books. If you're really into the modern design/modern craft/shopping scene, send me a private email and I'll send a little outline of what Hannover has to offer on that front.
I really think the best thing would be for your husband to see if his German colleagues have anything to recommend. The nearby town of Bielefeld is somehow sounding familiar, but can't think for the life of me why.
The ADAC road atlas lists both Enger and nearby (6km) Herford (larger) as worth a tourist visit. Both city websites may be in German but Enger and Herford are described briefly in wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enger
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herford
Herford is evidently home to British forces in Germany so there may be more English speakers.
Buses appear to run between the two cities about twice an hour. See the following for connections:

It could be a very nice adventure. Small towns and villages are often a surprising pleasure in Germany.
Regards, Gary
Detmold might be close enough for a daytrip. It boasts the largest open air museum in Germany.
