german trains...costs and schedules/web sites?

Can anyone direct me to a site (in english preferably) where I can find the cost and schedules for trains in Germany? In particular, I am having trouble with finding prices for Salzburg Austria to Munich (one site gave me 222 dollars for price for 4 people...but I have been told it is MUCH cheaper, and cannot find that info on line.
And I am trying to find what site to go for schedules and cost for Heidelberg to Paris....I cannot find the name of a site that I am told exists where I can get tickets ordered now for a discounted price for a trip in May. finding maps of stations has been hard too...again in English. Thanks for any help! Are there particular train lines that I am not aware of?

The most accurate website is the German Rail (Bahn) website.

The maximum fare for four people on an ICE from Salzburg to Munich would be €132 (about $180 today). That's what you would pay at the counter in Salzburg, but you can do far better than that. The ICE makes the trip in 1½ hrs.

On the other extreme, if you can take a little longer (2 hrs) you can make the trip with regional trains using a Bayern-Ticket for €28 (less than $40, for all four of you).

You can do it in in-between time (1:45) with an EC (Eurocity) train for about $160 for four people, full fare counter price.

And, if you are willing to book ahead, online, from the Bahn website, with a train specific non-refundable ticket, you can ride that ICE (1½ hr) for €49 ($66), total, for all four of you with a Sparpreis ticket.

Now what do you think of the site that quoted you a price of $222? My first inclination was that it must be RailEurope, but they charge even more, $244.

Now, in all fairness to a stateside reseller, that $244 included seat reservations, but you could get those in Salzburg for €4,50 per seat, total for the group of 4, €10,00 if you order the ticket online on the Bahn website.

The German Rail site is also the place to book tickets for Heidelberg-Paris because of the Savings fares that are available. The cheapest Europa-Spezial Frankreich fare is €39. If the allotted number of tickets at that price for your departure date and time are gone, you may still be able to get €49 tickets.

What stations are you looking for?

I have about 2 dozen major stations in Germany shown on my web page.

You can find layouts for any Bahn station in Bavaria at www.bayern-takt.de.

If there is a particular German website that you want to see, PM me, and I'll see if it is in my database.
