I got this from a hotel and was wondering if anyone knew anything about this? the German Railroad is working on some tracks between Munich and Fuessen until September 12th, so there are possible delays and the trip may involve changing trains twice. You should plan on being on the trains for about 3 hrs. minimum from Munich central train station just to be safe. We are grateful that you are conscious of the environment, however; under the current circumstances and due to recent personal experience, I cannot recommend taking the train as it is a bit chaotic right now.
I think the track work is between Munich Pasing and Kaufering. They are offering SEV (SchienenErsatzVerkehr = substitute bus service) from Donnersbergerbrücke S-Bahn station (2nd from Hbf going west) to Buchloe. Train service from Buchloe to Füssen is unchanged; you get to Füssen at 10:55. Instead of leaving the Hbf at 8:52, you now catch the SEV at Donnersbergerbrücke at 8:44, which means you need to leave Hbf tief on the S7 at 8:33. You can find schedules at the German Rail website, http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en. German Rail works on the tracks in the summer, and SEV detours are common. They are really no big deal. Every one I've been on (5 in the last 3 years) has run smoothly.
Lee - thanks for your answer. From what I can tell, its really not that much more time than driving, especially when you factor in: time getting car/paperwork, figuring route and adjusting to car, etc. I will do train, ante up for cab or bus as needed at end and still come out ahead financially, less stress and better for the environment...thanks You by the way are an amazing resource - do you do this professionally?
Question 1: Are you going on a workday (opposed to weekend day or holiday)? Question 2: Are you planning to leave Munich before 9 am to get to Füssen by 10:55?
If you don't mind getting up a little earlier, the 8:19 RE from the Hbf goes directly through to Buchloe without the SEV. But you have a 50 min wait in Buchloe for the same train to Füssen (breakfast anyone).
Hi, Lee - we are leaving from Munich on a workday and returning on a Saturday. I am flexible about time going out - as long as we arrive in time to hike a bit before eating...the trick will be getting a 24 yr old up after visiting the biergartens!
There is something called a Bayern-Ticket, which is an on/off all day pass for regional trains (that's about all there is to Füssen) for up to five people for €28. It's valid all day long until 3 AM the following morning, but not until after 9 AM on workdays. So if you want to leave Munich before 9 AM, you have to buy point-point tickets to the first station after 9 AM, probably Buchloe, for €10,50 pP. After that, you can use the Bayern-Ticket, but it doesn't sound like leaving before 9 AM is a problem for you. On Saturday, coming back from Füssen, you can use it all day long (from midnight). The Bayern-Ticket is also valid for the bus from Füssen Bahnhof to the bus stop at Hohenschwangau, site of the castles.
