I have been checking transportation in Germany and discovered the German Rail'n Drive....we can get 2, 3 or 4 days of train travel and 2 days of car, not consecutive if you don't want. The prices are in the $400 range for both of us....seems to good to be true..have any of you used this? Were you happy? Can you use the ICE trains?
I haven't used it, but it is my understanding that it is only offered on certain routes at certain times.
Rick has talked about this for years, but there is no mention of it, at least by that name, on the DB website. Maybe it's an offer of a car rental agency. Just the fact that it is listed in USD makes me feel it is not an offer of the Bahn. . . . . . ¶ If it were an offer of the Bahn, I would expect it to include (in fact require) travel on an express train (ICE/IC/EC). If you purchase sufficiently far in advance, 4 days of ICE travel for 2 can be as low as $250 (€196). . . . . . . . . . . ¶ I think I just saw something about it on RailEurope. www.raileurope.com/rail-tickets-passes/eurail-select-pass-n-drive/discounts-and-pricing.html. The least expensive option for 2 adults is just two days of rail travel in any of 3 countries (Select pass) plus two days in an economy car (not including fuel) for $616.
By the way, I´ve seen it shown on promotions offered at the Reisenzentrum and in DB´s on-board travel magazine, but I´ve never actually seen one of these trains in the flesh, either in a station, or traveling through the country side.
Hi everyone...well we just bought the German rail/drive....I spoke to a live person at the railpass office and was told we could go on any train that traveled in Germany....yeah...very good news...we paid $625 and that includes 3 days with a compact automatic and two days on any trains we want...we are going from Fuessen to Berlin and then Berlin to Munich...those two rides alone add up to over $l000 for the two of us...this was a very good deal for us and it works out perfectly....and of course we are using the ice trains for the majority of the above two rides...we could have had an intermediate standard car but we haven't driven a standard for many years so we thought automatic with air was the way to go...I will let you know how it goes when we get back.
Advance purchase, 2nd class Sparpreis tickets by ICE for two are €49 each way. That's about $125, Füssen to Berlin to Munich. . . . . . ¶ If you really have to have 1st class (a waste in my opinion), 1st class Sparpreis ticket would be €79 each way for two, €86 ($110 each way) with reserved seats, which would cost €11 for two seats, each way, with a railpass.
Tom, I think you are confusing "Autozug", where you take you own car with you on the train with "Rail'n Drive", which combines a rail pass with car rental.
"I spoke to a live person at the railpass office and was told ...those two rides alone add up to over $l000 for the two of us." . . . . . ¶ I'm sure that is what the "live person" wanted you to believe, but it's simply not true. For less than half that, only $462, you could have bought a 1st class THREE day rail pass and thrown away the third day. Or you could have used the third day to replace one of those days of car rental in Bavaria. Further, a second class pass for three days for both of you would have only been $336.
