German Hotel Reviews

Actually, I'm hoping you will give me a review. Those of you who post on this helpline are a wonderful help in the planning process - you & Rick should get awards for this service to the world! We are looking for comfort (we will book ensuite rooms), convenience, and peace & quiet at night. If you have had an experience with the following I'd like to hear about it. Munich: Hotel Europalischer Hof & Hotel Mons am Goetheplatz Frankfurt: 5 Elements Hostel Mainz: Hotel Koingshof Rothenburg: Hotel Gasthof Zum Breiterle
Thanks for sharing!

From your list I've only stayed at the Europäischer Hof in Munich. Last renovation must have been in 1971 in preparation for the '72 Olympics. No individual air conditioning in the rooms. You can open the windows but they face one of the busiest streets in Munich - and the central train station with all its noise (e.g. the taxi stand, too, is right underneath the windows). When they say single room they mean one small twin bed. Location is great and if you can get a great price for just one night it's absolutely ok to stay there. By the way the most popular hotel review site in the German speaking countries and by German speaking people is holidaycheck.com.

As much as I like the friendly, helpful staff at the 5 Elements and their decor, at the end of the day, it is still a hostel. It is also in the red light district which tends to bother some people, though it isn't unsafe there. I think you can do better than that at the price they charge for a double room ensuite. Try Ibis city center, or Holiday Inn Express.

We stayed in the Könighof 40 years ago. All I remember is that is was convenient to the Rhine boats and we got no sleep because it was June 21 (midsummer) and the streets were full of noisy people all night!

I stayed at Königshof in 2008 (late November) and found it perfectly acceptable. At that time, I didn't have the windows open, of course, so I can't complain about street noise. However, the room was nice, I had free wifi, and breakfast was as good as I have had anywhere. The person at the front desk spoke English (if that is important to you), and they had bacon and scrambled eggs on the breakfast buffet, along with the usual German choices. As someone mentioned, it's very convenient to the Mainz Hbf. I've never stayed at Europäischer Hof, but I had a friend in the 80s who often went to Muich on business and stayed there. He never complained about it. It's right across the street from the Munich Hbf. As for Munich, I have compiled a list of places in Munich that have been recommended by people on this site.

Meredith. Use the Trip Advisor site to check out travellers' opinions who have stayed at these hotels.
Google Trip Advisor and the name of the hotel. I have found this a most helpful tool when booking accommodation.

Stayed at the Hotel Koingshof almost exactly two years ago and would stay there again without a doubt if needing a place in Mainz. Traveling group of 6 had three rooms and they were all spacious, clean and comfortable. Hotel couldn't be more convenient to the train station and a short cab ride to the boat ramp. Breakfast was the most comprehensive I had on my entire European journey. That being said, if I had to do it again, I would probably stay in Rudesheim and launch my Rhine cruise from there instead. While there's nothing wrong with Mainz, I would have likely enjoyed the evening spent in a more quintessential and cute Rhine town.
