I am definitely going to see Neuschwanstein (sorry to be predictable), and was planning to do Hohenschwangau as well.... However Linderhof looks very interesting. 3 castles in one day is probably too much for us, so which would be best between Hoh and Lind?
You do undewrstand these are all reproduction castles built around 1870 try to also see a real castle there are a great many .
Linderhof is in reality a "chateau". It is nothing but living quarters for one person. It was built by Ludwig strictly as a very private residence. It is garishly decorated in Rococo style.
Hohenschwangau is more like a real castle, but it was also a peacetime residence. It was the home where Ludwig grew up. Hohenschwangau was built by Ludwig's father in the early 1800s over the ruins of some real castles.
Of the two, I prefer Hohenschwangau, but that is just a personal opinion.
I have not been to Linderhof, so I have no opinion of it. However, since Neuschwastein and Hohenschwangau are right beside each other, it would be far easier to do those two. I liked Hohenschwagau very much.
As mentioned, Hohenschwangua and Neu. are beside each other but since Neu.is not very big it should be easy enough to fit in a visit to Linderhof as well because it too is not very big...important to visit the Grotto at Linderhof. There are full day bus tours from Munich which include Linderhof, Oberammergau and Neu. and if you must wait for the time of your Neu.tour you might be able to pay a quick visit to Hohenschwangau.
Thanks for all the input! I'll present these ideas to my family. I'm sure it'll be great whichever we choose.
The bus, RVO 9606, that comes out from the Bahnhof in Füssen to Hohenschwangau village goes on to Oberammergau. From Oberammergau, it another 20 min bus ride to Linderhof.
I realize that most contributors on this site have a low regard for Neuschwaustein. I beg to differ. My wife and I share a love of architecture and decor. From these two standpoints, Neu is one of the most spectacular buildings we have seen. If "rebuild" is a negative, much of Germany is suspect. Almost all the cathedrals are rebuilt. Hohenschwangau is okay, but pales in comparison. After the postings I had read on Neu, particularly that much of it is unfinished and unseen by tour, I was not expecting much. The above criticism is far from true.
Becky: to me its not a matter of distance but "energy!"
I visited neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau .... very appealing... I decided to walk the trail up to neuschwanstein... while not long it sure was UPHILL!
Hohenschwangau requires some energy also
by the time I saw 2 castles I was ready for a break at hoffbrau!
enjoy!
