My husband and I are going to Munich this July and would like to spend a day in the Alps. We are having some trouble deciding where to go (Berchtesgaden, Garmisch-Partenkirchen?) Any thoughts?
IM(NSH)O, Berchtesgaden, although harder to reach from Munich, is better than Garmisch-Partenkirchen - prettier, less touristy.
The prettiest, least touristy of all would be Oberstdorf, in the Illertal of the Oberallgäu. Oberstdorf is not much farther by train from Munich. Next to Oberstdorf, and accessible by bus, is the Kleinwalsertal, a part of the Austrian Vorarlberg only accessible from Germany. From Oberstdorf you can easily get to the island city of Lindau, on Bodensee, and to Füssen, and the castles.
Agreed. If I'm giving up a day in Munich to see the alps it won't be in Garmisch. The Allgau area is definitely a more picturesque destination overall.
Definitely Berchtesgaden. To see a most stunning Alpine panorama while relaxing take a cruise to St. Bartholomew's on Lake Königsee. Magnificent!
Hi,
I'd go with one not on your list... Mittenwald. While we also love the Berchtesgaden area, I think Mittenwald will be easier by train and just as beautiful (if not more). It's less than 30 min. from Garmich. Take the Karwendel cable car (in Mittenwald) while you're there. We have some pic's at:
