Rick does not even mention staying in or visiting Geneva just the places around Lake Geneva in his 6th addition Switzerland. Any suggestions? Any comments about Hotel Bristol?
Trudie, let me see if I can get you started. You might consider going to Tripadvisor Geneva forum.....or ..go to top right hand corner of this page where you see search.....remove the word search and lenter GENEvA, this will bring up similar and most recent answers to similar questions you have. We personally like Geneva, and it's a good starting point for areas near by.
Thank you. Trudie
In my opinion Geneva isn't one of Switzerland's must visits. In all honesty, Switzerland's beauty lies in its countryside, not its cities. If you want to stay in that area, Fribourg, Murten, Gruyeres and Chateau Chillon are worth seeing. However, I'd be more inclined to spend your time in the Berner Oberland, Goms, Engadin, Luzern or up in the far north (Appenzell). What I'd do is pick up multiple guidebooks at the library and start looking - you might find that Geneva drops far down on your list.
And Geneva is hugely expensive in a country where everything is already more expensive. Geneva is rather boring when compared to the rest of Switzerland's astounding sights. It's not your quintessential Swiss tourist destination.
I am only going there because my daughter is with Proctor and Gamble and she has to work there in the European office. I agree Zermat, the mountains etc are much more interesting and I have visited much of Switzerland in the past. I do plan to take all the scenic day trips around the lake and we will go to Milan and Cinque de Terre on the weekend. Obviously Geneva is not for tourist!!!
Trudie, have you considered a trip to Annecy or Chamonix/Mt. Blanc? Rick S. covers these in some detail in French Guide book. Did you tell us what time of year you were going?
