Geneva <-> Lyon

Hello,
My husband and I are spending a vacation in Lyon (France), but we are flying to Geneva. It seems that both the French train and the Swiss train operate between the two cities. Does anyone have an opinion on the pros and cons for each?

More importantly, should we book the tickets now, or is the fare the same if we buy the tickets when we land in Geneva? If we buy non-refundable tickets now, we'd have to pray our flight arrives on time.

Thanks, and wish everyone nice travels!

No train recommendation, but a hint to not miss Annecy. It is the Venice of France. A beautiful small town on Lake Annecy with canals through the city. Annecy is between Geneva and Lyon.

I'm not sure why you would fly from Lyon to Geneva. It's like a 1hr15min drive by car that has a route with fantastic breathtaking views in the middle of the French/Swiss Alps.

I totally recommend you simply rent a car and drive. It will also be way less expensive than air fare.

If driving is not an option, I would recommend train for sure so you get to experience the scenery as I'm sure it will take you through the mountains.

We stayed in Lyon as our base destination and took day trips every day. Lyon is one of my favourite spots in western europe. It gives you perfect access to south of France, Italy, Switzerland all within 3 hour drives. If you have any other questions about this, don't hesitate to contact me.

Good luck with the planning!

Thanks everyone for your advice!

Elaine: we are taking the train and not by air. But I am interested in where you went for day trips from Lyon (preferably those that don't require a car).

Jeff: thanks for suggesting Annecy. We'll be sure to check it out.

Yes, planning trip is half of the fun!
