Hi there. Have a group of 8 uni students who want to spend an afternoon and evening in Geneva as a variation on Bern, where they've been for a couple of weeks. Any suggestions for an attraction or two for a group that likes limited walking?
Travel down the line to Lausanne and walk there. There may be gems in Geneva but in 4 days there I didn't find them. Lausanne is wonderful.
Actually, there are several areas in Geneva that are well worth a walk. One is on the hill above downtown. It has cobbled streets and wonderful old buildings. Also worthwhile is a walk up the lake to the international section. There is a wonderful museum of elegant scientific instruments in a mansion near the lake. The park, just beyond, has the best carousel I have ever seen.
Thanks, David, for the suggestions. Looks like rain is predicted and, of course, we are going on a museum-less Monday, so I appreciate your non-museum recommendations.
I was perfectly serious about Lausanne. Built on many levels it is a wondeful city to walk around, even in the rain. Many of the staicases connecting the levels have wooden roofs. Plenty of trolley-buses and normal buses and a neat funicular from the lake to the top. we love it, and Montreux and the Chateau de Chillon isn't far. Lausanne isn't far from Geneva. There is quite a lot on Lausanne in the RS Switzerland book, and we also use the Michelin Green Book and Lonely Planet, all for Switzerland. The three books focus on different things and compliment each other well. @david
Thanks for those other places in Geneva. We didn't discover them but I expect we will the next time we train in from Dijon.
