Geneva area - where to stay, and what lake cruise to take

Hi,

I will be traveling for business in early Sept then plan on spending time in the Murren area - I will end up flying (surprising cheaper than riding the eurorail from Lux to Geneva) into Geneva and want to take a lake cruise the following day to get me either to Lucernce or Vevey so I can catch a train to Murren.

I thought I remember reading a post that the train doesn't travel into Murren later than 4 p.m. - does that sound right or was it the gondola? So would need to take that into considerantion since I would be travelling from Geneva in the morning via boat to either Lucerene or Vevey and then riding the train to Murren. Is that do-able?

I know where I will stay in Murren and then will be taking the train to Zurich.

IN some of my research I have found something about a Swiss pass? I couldn't really tell what all it covers - would it cover the lake cruise, trains and gondola rides.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Taking a boat ride on lake Geneva may take to long on your travel day to Murren. The trip by train varies from about 3 1/2 hrs. to about 4 1/2 hrs. You can find all the train information at www.sbb.ch. If you get to Geneva the day before you go to Murren you may think about taking a day trip then. You can get boat info for lake Geneva at www.cgn.ch/eng. The Swiss pass is great. You can get more information on the Rick Steves websight or www.raileurope.com. For a boat ride you may also think about taking a day trip from Murren to Lake Thun or Lake Brienz near Interlaken. I hope you have a good trip.

I agree with Donald...you will not have enough time to take a Lake Geneva cruise, even the trip from Geneva to Vevey is many hours. I don't believe Lucerne is on Lake Geneva, but Lausanne is....they sound pretty similar.
In 2007 I bought a half fare Swiss pass at the railroad station. It was valid for 30 days and was good on lake boats, trains and most other transportation. I think this card is available only in Switzerland, and can't be purchased ahead of time. If my memory is correct, it cost 99 franc and we easily saved that much during our stay.
The Lake Brienz cruise is scenic....I also recommend that if you are in Interlaken, but I am sure Lucerne has cruises on that lake also.
Enjoy your trip.
