We booked a trip to Germany and are flying into Frankfurt. This was a mistake on our part as our destination if Munich but the ticket was $200.00 less. Much to our dismay getting from Frankfurt to Munich is pretty costly for 3 of us traveling so we're thinking of renting a car. Does anyone know gas prices in this area and is there an inexpensive way to travel from Frankfurt to Munich?
You can book the Frühbucher Spezial for €29 one way per person on www.bahn.de. Other than that diesel is $7.50 per gallon, regular gas is $8.28 per gallon. Diesel is not only cheaper but also has much better milage.
If you are willing to take the Sbahn & regional trains, and to take 6.5 hours, I believe that you three can travel to Munich for about 49 euros. Up to 5 people can travel throughout Bavaria on regional trains for 29 euros on a Bayern Ticket. The border of Bavaria comes quite close to Frankfurt, Kahl is one close place on the RE line towards Aschaffenburg. You buy 3 tickets to Kahl at 6.75 euros each and then a Bayern ticket to take you the rest of the way. You do not need to exit the train at Kahl. A ticket agent should be able to help you with this, probably also the DB ticket machine.

How do I go about buying the Frühbucher Spezial as it's in Germain and I'm sure what I'm doing
If you take a car you could also visit either Würzburg and Rothenburg ob der Tauber or the Black Forrest on your way to Munich. Both areas are en route. On the Frühbucher Spezial, it's valid on all routes if you book in advance and print out our own online ticket. It's non rebookable, non-refundable so you'll have to take the very train you booked. Just go to www.bahn.de, select English on the top right hand side and fill in the booking inquiry form. If the Spezial is available it'll show the price of €29... if not you'll get another fare.
Thanks everyone for all your help - I think we have decided finally to rent a car. With 3 of us traveling it seems to be the best economically although with gas prices like they are we're not sure. By traveling by car we'll be able to see a few sights along the way. We are spending just 2 days then traveling on to Fussen which is we'll be staying for the next 10 days. We won't need a car there so we'll leave the car in Munich. I'm really getting excited as this has been my first trip to Germany. I have traveled to Paris, Jersalem but haven't been to Germany!! Thanks again
Hi Linda, I'm a little confused. Are you spending 10 days in Fussen or Munich? I would think you would want the car in Fussen, but not Munich. Either way 10 days seems like a lot for either place. We spent 4 days in Munich on our last trip and that was more than enough time. We also spent 2 days near Fussen which was wonderful - I could have easily stayed another day. Since we had a car we stayed in Ruette which was beautiful. If you have time I highly recommend hiking to the Ehrenberg ruins.
We would be traveling from Frankfurt to Munich on May 2nd. Our flight arrives at 7:45
Linda, after maybe 3 or 4 days in the Füssen area you might want to relocate to Berchtesgaden or Salzburg/Hallstadt (lake) for another 4 days or so.
We will be renting bicycles in Fussen to sight see from there. We will be staying at Beim "Landhannes"a working farmhouse and using that as our home base. We have always wanted to cycle around a country and this will be our first experience at it. In the USA we have done a 100 miles in day so we're hoping to cover some good miles and see some beautiful scenry at the same time. Is it mostly hilly terain or faily flat in most areas?
"getting from Frankfurt to Munich is pretty costly for 3 of us traveling so we're thinking of renting a car." Renting a car is NOT the least expensive way to get there.
What would be the way to go? I've checked the Bahn and haven't come up with any good deals
Linda, what date do you need to travel from Frankfurt to Munich?
