Gasoline or diesel in France?

We will be renting a car and driving through Brittany and the Loire Valley. Which is more easily obtainable in that area - diesel or gasoline?

You will get more miles per liter with diesel.

Ditto on the better mileage for diesel. All rental cars we have had in the EU were diesel. They were also all stick shift which was fine with us.

I agree about the mileage - I drive a diesel. The question however was about availability. Does anybody agree with me on that part?

Both equally available. Yes, Nigel, I aree with you and always rent diesel.

Diesel seems to be available at any station. And not only is mileage better, but diesel is cheaper in France.

Thank you for the information. Diesel it will be!

FYI...Unlike in the States the green nozzle is not diesel. There is usually a sticker on the gas cap of rental cars color coordinated to the correct nozzle to use. You don't want to put the wrong gas in the rental car.

...and in France it is also called "gazole" or "gasole" or some similar spelling. Sometimes the pump will say diesel, but not always. At least that's been our experience driving for the last 2 weeks here.

If I have a choice, I choose diesel. When I picked up my last rental, I asked about a diesel. They had one but charged five more euro for the choice. I drove 3,000 km and saved much more than the five euro in fuel. You shouldn't have any problem finding either fuel. Make sure you know the correct name and put only the correct fuel into the car.
