Does anyone have a particularly nice place to stay in Garmish-Partenkirchen? Also, does anyone know what weather might be in Murren late in September?
Indian summer or early snow fall and everything in between possible for Murren weather. For GaP, look up either Hotel Rheinischer Hof or the Fraundorfer.
Yes, I have a place in Garmish that I LOVED:
http://www.hohe-tannen.de/index.php/en.html It's a pretty, charming B&B/guesthouse that was a terrific value. Small, spotless, comfortable, very accomodating owners, great bfst each AM, etc. Nothing "fancy", mind you, but just the sort of "homey" place you picture in the German countryside; was a pleasure to return to after a long day of hiking/sightseeing, etc. Great location, too; very easy walk to the entrance of the cogwheel train for the 1st leg of the trip to the Zugspitze (spectacular, btw!). Place itself is in a quiet, very nice neighborhood and it's an easy, pleasent 5-10ish min walk to the town center. Good luck w/ the rest of your travel planning. Enjoy!
I've been in Murren in early Oct and had bright, warm sunny days, and chilly wet days. (I've had that variation in summer, too--I think you always need to be prepared for anything in the Alps). Fall is actually drier than summer.
Depends on what your interests are. If you want a B&B small-type feel, don't go here, but if you're looking for a hotel, Hotel Mercure was fabulous. The workers were all friendly and nice, it has a pool, the rooms were clean, nice and comfy. View was beautiful. I think I booked a double room for 80 euro, which was an amazing price, especially considering the breakfast they have in the mornings. A huge variety of cheeses, honey, fresh fruit, yogurt, breads, pretzels, etc. It was perfection, and that breakfast was worth at least 10-15 euro each person in my mind, which made the room rate even more astounding. It's a bit far from the train station (20 min walk I'd say) so definitely walkable but if you have large bags you may want to take a taxi.
