Hello! We are taking an overnight trip to visit the Munich area on our 3 week trip. The plan is to drive in early morning from Stuttgart, visit Dachau and Munich. Originally the plan was to drive and stay in Garmish for the night and head to Neuschwanstein the following day and explore - then head back to Stuttgart that night. It's a lot, I know - but we only have 2 days in our itinerary to knock it out. Like I said - originally the plan was to stay in Garmish for the overnight, but it's also been recommended to check out Fussen instead. What would you recommend? Or is there somewhere else you think is better. Maybe we should stay in Munich that night and visit Neuschwanstein from there? There are 7 of us total - including 2 teenagers
I would do this: visit Dachau in the morning, head straight to Garmisch - it's a short drive - and enjoy Garmisch in the afternoon/evening. Sleep there and head to Füssen the other day. Sorry, you don't have time to visit München as a half-day visit sandwhiched between Dachau and somewhere else.
Since you are so limited on time, I would bypass Garmisch and concentrate on Fuessen and the surrounding area. Driving from Stuttgart and visiting Dachau and Munich is a long day. However, after one, or both of those visits, I would drive south and stay in, or close to, the town of Schwangau. Use the town's website, www.schwangau.de, to check for accommodations. Then, after a restful night, you have two options. First, would be to get an early morning visit to Neuschwanstein and then take the teenagers to the Tegelberg Luge ride. Or, you could reverse it. They would absolutely love the luge ride and going earlier in the day would help to avoid the possible afternoon thunderstorms. Have a great trip making lifetime memories with the family!

Thanks! That's exactly the info I was looking for. We were thinking Garmisch because we are retired military and thought we'd be getting a deal to stay at the Edelweiss resort. Turns out it isn't so much of a good deal after looking at other options in nearby towns. I will check that website out.
