What would be the best Metro line to take from Gare du Nord to St Paul on the # 1 line? Would it be the # 4 or #10, and then connect to the # 1?

Exactly what I would have suggested. Transfer on to Line 1 in the direction of La Defense at Bastille.

Best route is:
Take Line # 5 from Gare du Nord to Bastille, then
Line # 1 to St. Paul. (Only 1 stop away from Bastille)
(This avoids the Chatelet-Les Halles area, which you
want to do at all costs)

There is some kind of construction work going on at the Bastille stop now. I know Line 1 runs through OK, but there might be other limitations in service.

It's only line # 8 at Bastille that is affected, and that line only up to August 20, 2010.

Does the transfer at Bastille require going up stairs? I know there's an escalator to street level at St. Paul.
