Galicia & Northern Portugal - any tips?

Hi there,
I will be traveling in this order Mardid --> Guarda, Portugal --> Porto, Portugal and eventually will want to end up in Galicia, specifically Lugo. Any transportation recommendations between Porto and Galicia? I cannot rent a car. I wouldn't mind stopping in Santiago de Compostela for a night before catching a connection to Lugo.

Any recommendations on things to do while in Porto or SdC would be great too. I think I will be in Porto during the Festa de Sao Joao. Thanks all.

We also plan to visit that region in August. Very little info available, few answers to our posts. We believe the bus system will be the most flexible and functional transport between Spain and Portugal. You can also try posting at TripAdvisor.

You must visit Douro Valley while in Porto. It is lovely tranquil and a great visit for the day or overnite.

I second JS's suggestion. The Duoro Valley is magnificient. Easily accessible by train from Porto. Get going early and spend the whole day there. You will love Porto too.

I also am a huge fan of the Douro Valley. We stayed / splurged a bit at Pousada Solar de Rede. Worth it - the food was fantastic, the views were wonderful. I also really liked the Navarre and the Bussaco Forest, semi in North Central Portugal. My BFF and I (early 30's women) had an amazing trip to Portugal. We did not go to Porto - seems like the only city that we didn't see;-) Enjoy!
