FYI - Free French Museums

Taking a page out of the Brits' books, 14 French museums will be free from January 1st for six months, an experiment to see if attendance is increased and widened. Three in Paris are involved, the Guimet, the Cluny, and Arts et Metiers. Orsay will also be free one evening a week, for young people between the ages of 18 and 25. Opponents say the beneficiaries will largely be we foreign tourists, who don't pay French taxes:)

Well, I agree tourists will benefit, but not to a huge degree,The Museum of Arts et Metiers is from what I have heard a great museum, BUT, it is all in french, with no english descriptions apparently, and much of the work diplays etc. would benefit from the explanations! LOL
The Cluny is a museum I have been to, and frankly I do think it is underseen,, I have gone in the summer, high tourist season, and it almost always has a very very short line( like ten people, LOL) , so perhaps if interest in it is stimulated abit( some people will just go because it is free) they will get more visitors, and charge in July and August and make it free for slow months.
Having the Orsay free one night for younger folks is a good idea, younger tourist have budgets, and beer sometimes comes before Museum admissions, plus local youths also need the price break.

Great tip, Norm, thanks! Is there any online reference to this anywhere? Hopefully there is b/c this would be a great addition to the Airline's monthly newsletter! I'm sure many CDG bound Crews will appreciate knowing about this...Cheap is good but free is even better!

Susan...they haven't announced yet which evening the Orsay will be free for young people. However, you can keep checking their website at http://www.musee-orsay.fr/en/home.html to be on top of it when they finally announce it. Another museum opening for free during the six months is the air and space museum out at Le Bourget.
