I'm planning the itinerary for a trip this fall to Germany. We'll be traveling from Fussen to Lutherstadt-Wittenburg at one point in the trip. I know the drive will fill most of the day but can anyone give me some suggestions for a stop or two along the way? I'd thought about Nurnberg but would really like to see some smaller, less traveled places. I would like to include a concentration camp at some point. Since I just went to Dachau last year, I thought about going to Buchenwald this year. The group I'm traveling with hasn't been to either. My question is, for those who have been to both, which would you choose?
Have been to both Dachau & Buchenwald. While there is actually not a lot to see at either of them because most of the structures have been removed, they are both equally moving. Of the two I would suggest Buchenwald for the extensive museum housed in one of the remaining domitories. As for less visited places in the area that you are going, I highly recommend the small town of Quedlinburg. This is a beautiful old town that is very popular with German tourists but not much visited by Americans.
