Fussen to Mittenwald

I am trying to figure out if you can get from Fussen to Mittenwald without a car? I looked on Bahn website and it had a 11 hour trip???? It's like 30 minutes in a car.

If you purchase tickets to Neuschwanstein prior to arrival can you go strait in or will you still be waiting once you get there. The biggest turn off for me going there is the uncertainty of admission.

I did not know how to type ü before now! Do you know how to type the slash above words also?

Anyway I can't figure out what Mittenwald station to take? Is the city that big or is there also another Mittenwald.

From what I gather Mittenwald, Seefeld, and Garmisch-Partenkirchen are all within walking distance of each other? I read on a forum last night something about a bridge from Germany to Austria high in the Alps somewhere in this area but now I can't find the link...does anyone know what I'm talking about?

If you have a PC, look under Windows/System32 for Charmap.exe. Run it and look under almost any font (eg. Arial). You will find that, for instance, á is Alt+0225.

I think you need to be a pretty strong walker for Mittenwald and GaP to be within walking distance of each other. They're 20 minutes apart by train.

Laura: You can get there by train, it's 2.5 to 3.5 hours because of the connections, but you can do it. The reason you're getting 11 hours is you're misspelling the town name on the Bahn site and so the Bahn site thinks you want to go to the town of Fussen, which is not where you want to go: you want to go to Füssen (the ü is typed by holding down the Alt key while typing 0252) or you can also spell it Fuessen (that's the nearest English equivalent to the correct German spelling)--just don't spell it Fussen because that's a different town in Germany. BTW, by car it's not 30 minutes but more like 1hr 15mins by the fastest route and 1hr30min by the better recommended (by ViaMichelin) route.

I remember Samantha Brown on the travel channel mentioning something about taking the cable car from Mittenwald to the top of the alps and merely stepping over the border into Austria. Check out Mittenwald's website www.mittenwald.de for the name of the cable car and more info on the town. Have fun making lifetime memories!

Hi Laura,

Mittenwald has one train station. It's a very easy 5 minute or so walk from the station to the pedestrian zone. Mittenwald is not big and is not a city. It is a gorgeous Bavarian village surrounded by Alps. Simply beautiful!

The cable car in Mittenwald is called the Karwendelbahn. Although it does not share a border with Austria, it's a great trip.

What you are thinking of is the Zugspitze, which you can get to from Garmisch (20 minutes from Mittenwald). From the top of the Zugspitze, you can walk back and forth over the German/Austria border.

Seefeld, Austria is about 20 minutes (by car) south of Mittenwald and Garmisch is about 20 minutes (by car) north of Mittenwald. Out of the 3, Mittenwald is best (IMO).

Hope this helps.

I just went to this area in June with a group of Girl Scouts. We prebooked our castle tickets for the earliest tour time. We arrived an hour before the time only to find the ticket booth not open yet. If you arrive 15-30 minutes early you may have to wait a while to pick up your tickets but you will still have plenty of time to get to the castles for your stated tour time. It was definitely worth it to get there early before the huge groups arrived. We were done with both castle tours by lunch time and had a relaxing meal afterwards. We took the bus up to N. Castle and rode the horse carriage down much to the delight of the girls. Both H. and N. Castles were quite interesting.
