Fussen or Munich, hotel near airport?

Hello - we will be traveling from Salzburg to Bavaria to see Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. Where should we stay the night before castle day: straight to Fussen to get an early start, or stop in Munich to see some of the city?

Also, we have an early Sunday morning flight out of Munich (leaves 7 AM) - any recommendations on a hotel convenient to the airport?

Thanks in advance!!

This all depends on how early you are willing to leave Salzburg. It would be nice to see some of Munich, but if you want to see both castles, you really should spend the night in Füssen.

As for flying out at 7 AM, that means you need to be at the airport by 4-5 AM. That's awful early. I would really recommend Freising. There are several properties there. Some people have liked Zur Gred, but I'll have to see how early the bus runs.

We'll be spending a full day in Salzburg the day before. What if we went straight to Fussen, got a good night's rest, did the castles early the next morning, and then spent the rest of the afternoon in Munich? Is Freisling close enough to Munich to be able to drop off our luggage and then explore the city a bit?

If you are only leaving your luggage for a few hours, you don't need to use the left luggage facilities in the Hbf. Munich Hbf has a lot of lockers (called Schließfächer in German) just off track 26. You can leave your bags there. Most likely, a small locker, for €3, or certainly a large locket for €5, will hold all of your bags.

The first bus of the morning leaves Freising Bahnhof at 4:05 and gets to the airport at 4:26. The fare for an adult is €2,40.

In Freising, I would suggest Hotel Zur Gred. If you are on a budget, I would suggest Knoth Gästehaus.

Thanks Lee and Ian for the good advice - I think we will stay in Reutte or Fussen to be able to get a good start on seeing the castles the next day.

Lee, we were hoping to get back to Munich by the afternoon and walk around a bit in the city - Freisling looks pretty far from Munich. Any thoughts on staying the Novotel airport hotel? I've also heard mention of Hotel Konigshof?

The Novotel airport hotel is at the airport. (Some "Munich airport hotels" are not.) The airport is no closer to Munich than Freising. The Novotel is certainly likely to be handier the morning of your flight.

For a short stay before flying, I have liked Freising better than Munich. There is an attractive monastery, the world's oldest active brewery and an nice old town center. It would not fill up several days like Munich, but is nice for a day.

Another option is to stay in Munich close to a handy Sbahn line to take you to the airport. The Ostbahnhof (East train station) is about 31 minutes from the airport by S-Bahn 8 and about 5 minutes from Marienplatz (town center) by several S-bahns. There is a Motel-One near there with good rates. Check Hrs.com for this and other possibilities; you specify a hotel search near a particular station.

Hi Christine,

Just wanted to comment on your "I think we will stay in Reutte or Fussen to be able to get a good start on seeing the castles the next day." I'd skip Reutte and stay in Fuessen. We like Fuessen (stayed there twice) but Reutte... stopped there twice and were very under-whelmed.

We can recommend the Hotel zum Hecten in Fuessen. Stayed there twice ('01,'03).

Just my two cents.
