Fussen / Hohenschwanqau (Hotel Mueller)

I am going to drive down from Rothenburg spend the night somewhere near the castles. See the castles the next day and drive on to Munich that night. Any suggestions on good places to stay? I have heard very favorable things about Hotel Mueller in Hohenschwanqau - or should I stay in Fussen?

I've only spent one day at a time in Füssen, so I've never had the need to spend the night at Mühler, but I've eaten lunch there twice and it was always nice.

Ron - we stayed at Hotel Mueller in August 2006. We had the two bedroom "apartment" for our family of 4. It was, as you can imagine, quite large - with a nice sitting room as well. I don't know how a standard room would be but our room also had a view of Neuschwanstein (sorry about the spelling!) from the sitting area that was absolutley gorgeous. We ate dinner in their restaurant and it was good with very friendly service. I was also happy with how they handled us when we changed our reservation dates not once but twice - always a good sign when a hotel can keep it straight for you!

May I recommend staying in another nearby town besides Fussen? Although it is close to the castles, I found the town a bit too over-touristed. Better options include Reutte, Mittenwald or Garmisch-Partenkirchen. But if all you desire is a place to sleep, Fussen is fine.

We just stayed at Hotel Mueller in November. We loved it--very nice room, great breakfast, wonderful staff, and very good restaurant. We loved the location for seeing the castles. We drove over to Fussen to look around but it did not appeal to us at all--too busy and if you end up in a hotel in the heart of Fussen you will probably have a noisy room. We drove there from Rothenburg and the drive took longer than we expected so we had to find HM after dark. It is a beautiful area.

Hotel Alpenstuben in Hohenschwangau was terrific. Stayed there last summer with a castle view room. The rooms were recently renovated and very clean, the have a small parking lt on premises and the food was very good at the hotel restaurant. Keep in mind that once the castle closes the town does too. But we still enjoyed it - we went to the lake in town - very nice. It was quite relaxing but like you are going to do we drove from Rothenburg saw the castle and stayed the night. There is much more to do at night in Rothenburg than in Hohenschwangau. We had 2 children with us and they really liked it.
