Fussen Germany hotels

My husband and I are stopping in Fussen in September on our way to the Passion Play in Oberammergau. We are going to stay 1 night and go to the castles. Does anyone have a hotel recommendation that is close to the castles? Also, does anyone recommend taking the funiculars up the Zugspitze? We would like to do that but not sure if it's worth the money. Thanks in advance.

I haven't been up the Zugspitze in over 20 years. I went up in 1988; it's not the kind of thing you need to do more than once in your life. Unless they have changed things, there is a train from the main station in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Somewhere, around Grainau, you change to a Zahnradbahn (cog train) for the trip most of the way up the mountain. Shortly after that there is a stop at the bottom of the cable car (Seilbahn) that goes up to the summit. If you stay on the train, you go through the mountain to a saddle on the back side, and it is a gondola from there to the summit. It's faster with the cable car.

If you are staying in Oberammergau, there is a bus from the Oberammergau Bahnhof to Hohenschwangau and Füssen. It takes 1-2 hours and drops you off at the tourist center in Hohenschwangau, just around the corner from the ticket kiosk for the castles.

We stayed at Hotel Kurcafe in 2004...just steps from the train station. It was wonderful...the rooms were great...the breakfast was amazing! We read about it in RS Germany guidebook...it isn't exactly a budget option...but it was one of our splurges and we plan to return this summer.

Hi Tina,

We stayed twice at the Hotel zum Hechten in Fuessen.

Will you have a car? You can make the short drive into Ehwrwald, Austria from Fuessen and "do" the Zugspitze from here. It's a bit cheaper and a lot quicker (one 15 min cable car ride) to the top.

For a "less dramatic" cable car, you could check out the Tegelbergbahn, 1 mile from Neuschwanstein. There's also a luge (Sommerrodelbahn) ride there.

we went up the zugspitze from the austrian side early in the day. it was the single most expensive activity we did on the trip but for us it was worth it because we had a beautiful sunny day. i would suggest checking the weather before spending the money because it does get hazy. if you go take a coat, ice in july.

I'm sorry to disagree about Hotel Kurcafe, but we didn't care for it. We were there in Aug '08 and thought it was overpriced and not great. We wished we had stayed at a hotel right where the castles are. That was the whole reason we went, and it would have been much nicer to stay right there surrounded by the beautiful scenery and the castles.

We also are going to be in Fussen in September. We are staying at the Schlossrestaurant Neuschwanstein. I obviously can't give an opinion since we haven't stayed yet but after reading about it (historical property, excellent location) I'm excited to stay there!

I'd suggest checking TripAdvisor for a hotel by the castles in Hohenschwangau. They have 6 that they rate.

We also really enjoyed the Alstadthotel zum Hechten and will stay there again at the next opportunity.

We stayed right by the castles at Hotel Mueller and loved it. The staff and meals were great. Room had a view of Neuschwanstein Castle, comfortable beds, welcome basket with fruit and candy, etc. The hotel arranged for our tics for castle tours. Would definitely stay there again--not cheap though. Fussen did not appeal to us.

Nice and helpful staff.

Back in 2008, we stated at the Hotel Sonne in Fussen and really liked it. It was a great price, had parking, laundry and was central to everything. We walked to the castles from there. Enjoy!

We enjoyed Hotel Sonne very much and ended up staying there two extra days waiting for a new tire for our rental car. We then drove to Schwangau for our visit to the castles.

I stayed at Hotel Kurcafe about 4 yrs ago, in September. It was very nice, great breakfast, centrally located, very close to the train station, but the room was VERY LOUD as it was facing the main drag. There was continuous traffic all night. I don't think there was air conditioning and it was pretty warm outside, so we had to have the windows open. Something to consider, I'd opt for a room in back.

If you have a car, there is an inn just outside the city in Weisensee called the Pension Steigmuhle. It is a family run place and very quiet. If you upgrade to a balcony room, it has a very nice view of the lake and it will only cost you around 65 euros a night, including a good breakfast. Staying in hotels at the foot of the Neuschwanstein castle is convenient but about double the cost and not much to do there at night.

We stayed at the Hotel Kurcafe in Fussen in 2000. It was nice, and we enjoyed it. What really impressed us though occurred on September 12, 2001. We received an e-mail from the manager of the hotel expressing great sorrow for the American people after 9-11. We greatly appreciated that expression of kindness on that horrible day.

"If you have a car...."???

According to the Bahn, Pension Steigmühle, at Alte Steige 3, is a 2 min walk, less than 100 yds, from the Weißensee-Oberkirch bus stop on the bus line between Füssen and Pfronten. The bus takes 12-16 min from the Füssenbahnhof and I counted 10 buses from Füssen to Oberkirch between 9:00 and 17:00 (8 hrs).

By the way, it looks like a really nice place (look at those flowered balconies).

Pension Steigmuhle was great! The rooms were nice and the breakfast was wonderful. I have stayed there twice, and they can recommend a great little brewery located out the the countryside where only locals go for dinner....very reasonable. Also, they speak English at the pension and were very helpful when I had car trouble.

We've stayed @ the Hotel Hirsch (Fussen) twice & really loved it. The rooms are themed, good sized & the breakfast was excellent.

I just stayed at the Hotel Hirsch on Thursday and really enjoyed it. It was very reasonably priced for the high quality of the accomodations. It has a real Bavarian feel to it with the art, decoration, and craftmanship. I paid 75 Euros for a single. There is free wifi. The staff was wonderful. I had a very early train ride the next morning and the evening desk person called into the kitchen and they put together a large meal to carry with me that I snacked on all the way to Berlin. They really went the extra mile, it's a nice place to stay.
