We will be in Germany in mid-September. After Fussen, we want to take the train to the Black Forest, stay one night, then take the train to Mainz. Would Gengenbach be a good place to stay overnight? When I put that schedule in the train website it takes us through Stuttgart, then back down to Gengenbach. Would it be better to take local trains more directly to Gengenbach? We don't have any particular things we want to see, except just get a feel for the Black Forest area, which is where some of my ancestors emigrated from. And lodging recommendations for that one night in the Black Forest? Thanks for your help.
When I use the "train website" for Fuessen to Gengenbach on several different dates leaving in the morning, I find one connection at 5h37min and two at 6h00min. All those connections go through Stuttgart, but none on them change trains there. There is also a connection via Lindau and Friedrichshafen, on the Bodensee, that takes only 6h06min (10:06-16:12), although it does have two more changes than the Stuttgart route. It goes from Rudolfzell to Offenburg via Triberg on what is called the Schwarzwaldbahn, a particularly scenic stretch through the Black Forest. This route is entirely by regional trains, so you could make the entire trip for €48, total, for two people, with a Quer-durchs-Land-Ticket.
