I am travelling to Stuttgart for about 4 or 5 days to stay with some friends who live there. They are able to drive me around, and I was wondering if it is possible to fit in a day trip to Fussen to visit the Ludwig castles there. It seems like a lot to fit into one day, but wondering if it is feasible to grab a meal in Fussen and visit at least one castle, then return to Stuttgart that same evening. Any suggestions on what to do in and around Fussen would be appreciated too! Does anyone have a restaurant they can recommend there?

Yes it's possible. It's a really, really long day, especially if you hit a stau, which could add 2 or 3 or 5 hours on the base driving time. There's so many awesome castles around Stuttgart though. I suggest you leave the decision up to your hosts if they want to make the trip or not, that's asking a lot.
