Is it worthwhile to spend an overnight in Fussen or can I see what there is to see by doing a day trip from Munich?
Also, if I stay overnight, can I find a bus or train from Fussen to Obermammergau that will get me there with enough time to see that town and still return back to Munich in the morning. I have only 4 days to spend in the Munich area and plan to also go to Dachau one day. I am not sure what is the best way to plan this. Maybe day trips from Munich to each place would be best rather than Munich to Fussen to Oberammergau and back to Munich. I don't mind not staying in one place but need to know what is most feasible.
Regionalverkehr Oberbayern (RVO, www.rvo-bus.de) runs the buses in the area south of Munich. The have a bus, #9606, that runs between Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Füssen, and it stops at the train station in Oberammergau. The trip between Füssen and Oberammergau takes 1½ hr . There are buses leaving Füssen Bahnhof at 8:05 or 9:45, getting to Oberammergau at 9:29 or 11:02. The bus from Füssen to Oberammergau is the same one that you use to go to the castles, so you can also take it from the Hohnschwangau stop to Oberammergau. The last bus leaves Oberammergau at 5:25 PM and gets back to Füssen Bhf at 6:59. There are other buses (schedules here) during the day.
