I've never been to Europe before. I'm taking the tour from Berlin, through Dresden, Prague, and ending in Vienna. I'll have a few days to travel before I come home. I'd like to visit Fussen, and see the castle and luge, before going to Munich. Has anyone been there? Can anyone give me some hints on things to do/look for/try to avoid?
When the guidebook says there are lockers at a train station, would they be big enough for my Rick Steves backpack (aka "convertible carry on")? Is it safe to lock my backpack in a train station for a whole day? Will it be there when I get back?
Hi Kim, Sorry, I can't help with advice for the train station and lockers.
As far as Fuessen goes, we love it. Very charming and pictuesque old town. We've stayed here on two separate trips the last 10 years. Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau are about 10 minutes from Fuessen. The Tegelberg cable car and luge (together, but separate rides) are just a mile or 2 from Neuschwanstein. If you could stay the night in Fuessen, that's what I would do. Paul
Thanks, Paul. My plan right now is to spend a morning taking a biking SOM tour in Salzburg, then catching the afternoon train to Fussen, and spending two nights there. So, arrive late that night, have one whole day, and half of another day before taking the train to Munich. Would that be enough time in Fussen, or would I be better losing a day in Munich and spending more time in Fussen?
Can you tell me anything about Fussen that isn't in the Rick Steves guidebook? Is it easy to find one's way around?
Fuessen is very easy to walk. It's even prettier at night. For info on Fuessen, look at: www.fuessen.de I can say we loved both our stay at the Hotel zum Hechten in Fuessen. For dinner we liked the restaurant at the Hechten and at the Gasthof Kone. I forget the names of the other places we had dinner. The Krone was "kitschy" for lack of a better word. We liked it and had a good time though. While in Fuessen, try the Mead/Honey Wine. I don't really care for wine but this was fantastic! www.hotel-hechten.com www.mittellich-fuessen.de/index.php Salzburg is gorgeous. How many nights do you have there? Having a late night, full day/night and then a half a day for Fuessen, etc. is good. If you have another day/night available to take from Munich, spend more time in Salzburg and the area if you don't have more than a night or two planned for it. If you know the dates you'll be in Fuessen and the day you'll visit Neuschwanstein, you may want to reserve your tickets in advance. In can get very crowded with long lines and waits. www.hohenschwangau.de/ticketcenter0.0.html Paul
Thanks, Paul! I'll take your advice and make reservations.
Thanks for the websites for Fussen. It sounds like it's even better than the guide book makes it out to be. And with two castles, a luge, and a bike path around the Forggensee, it was already sounding pretty great.
Hey Kim, I should have posted this for the Gasthof Krone: www.krone-fuessen.de I think you'll have a great time in Fuessen and the castles, the luge ride, etc. By the way, the luge ride is called the "Sommerrodelbahn" in Germany. www.schwangau.de/tegelberg-cablecar-626.html www.schwangau.de/the-summer-luge-636.html www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIOSP9ivbZA Paul
Kim, we have left our backpacks (RS convertible carry on) in lockers in numerous train stations with no problem. Most train stations have lockers of varrying size. some are big enough for 3 or 4 bags. Probably most of the regulars on this website have been to Fussen and the castles. It is a VERY popular tourist desitnation. It's possible to purchase your tickets in advance via the internet. Don't know if you watch much TV, but the amazing race that aired tonight was in Fussen. They had to find a clue in King Ludwig's bedroom. We've also done the luge which is close to the town. We had a car, but I would think it's possible to get there by either walking, or public transportation.
Thanks, Jill So good to know about the lockers. I'm traveling by train, and then I'll be on foot, though I'll probably rent a bike and bike around the lake (it's in the guidebook that it's 20 miles around, and I do that in an hour long cycle class, so that sounds about perfect for me).
Maybe I can use a rental bike to get to the luge, or I'll walk. It looks like everything is in walking distance, right? Thanks, Paul, I got on the internet and made a reservation for the castles, and sent an inquiry for a hotel.
Kim, in ref to the luge, it will shut down for even the slightest drizzle. The storms tend to build up in the afternoon. Often, the rain passes over and the ride attendants will dry off the luge and reopen. It is a lot of fun and has great views of the castles. Have a great trip!
While waiting for the train last Dec., I happened to look in the lockers at Füssen. Two sizes, both more than big enough.
Here is a picture of the lockers at Füssen. The lockers are on the outside of the station building, which is run by the Bahn. I think all the lockers are standard sizes in all stations. I've put two Rick Steves Convertible backpacks in a single locker with plenty of room to spare, and I think I remember it being the smaller size. Make sure you have some Euro coins with you. The lockers are secure, and I think they say that they are valid for 24H, but I wouldn't leave my bag there overnight.
Numerous bike trails in the Fussen area and it's only 3 miles to the castles. An easy ride.
Thanks for all the replies! Relieved to know about the lockers, and looking forward to finding the bike trails around Fussen. I missed the Race TV show, but I'll see if I can watch it online just to see the luge.
If the luge is closed for weather after I tour the castles, I'll try again the next day before I leave Fussen.
We stayed at Suzannes B&B, within walking distance to the train station. When we were there we rented a car which made it much easier to get around. Book ahead because when we were there another family did not reserve a car and there were none available which geratly limited their mobility. We enjoyed the castles but my teenagers really liked the luge ride. We went two different days. Have a great time.
